Shobuyu is a hot bath with bundles of shobu leaves floating in it, a custom for Children's Day on May 5th. The long leaves have a strong, fresh smell, and people have long used them to ward off bad luck and illness. The word shobu also sounds like a word meaning "valuing martial spirit," so the day became linked to boys, and the bath to wishing them good health. Many public bathhouses still offer it on the day.

Shobuyu is a seasonal bath that many Japanese families take on May 5th, Children's Day. You put a bundle of long, green shobu leaves in the hot water, and the bathroom fills with a sharp, clean smell, a little like fresh grass. The custom comes from the old festival on the fifth day of the fifth month, which came to Japan from China.
Early summer was a time when people often got sick, and strong-smelling plants were believed to keep evil away. Later, because shobu sounds like a word meaning "valuing martial spirit," the day came to be seen as a festival for boys. One thing that confuses people is the plant itself.
The shobu used in the bath is not the purple iris you see in gardens. It's a different plant with plain leaves and almost no flowers. Today, many public bathhouses put shobu in the tub on May 5th. I like it because it's a simple way to feel the season change.
Is it the same plant as the purple irises in Japanese gardens?
No, and even many Japanese people mix them up. The garden flower is hanashobu, a kind of iris. The bath plant is a different plant with fragrant leaves and very plain flowers.
Do I need to do anything special in a shobuyu bath?
Not really. You just soak and enjoy the smell. In some homes, people tie a leaf around a child's head for good health, but customs differ from family to family.

FACTIt's mostly leaves, not flowers. The point is the fresh smell of the leaves, and the plant used is not the garden iris.
