Nyuyokuzai means bath additives, the powders, tablets and liquids that people in Japan add to their bathtub at home. In many Japanese homes, the evening bath is not just for washing. People wash and rinse off first, then soak in hot water to relax and warm up, so the water in the tub stays clean and is often shared by the whole family.
Bath additives make that soak more enjoyable. Some turn the water milky white or green and copy the color and smell of famous hot springs. Others smell like yuzu, cypress or flowers, and fizzy tablets release bubbles. Drugstores have whole shelves of them, and many come in small packets, one for each bath, so you can visit a different hot spring town every night.
Many products are sold as quasi-drugs and say they help with things like stiff shoulders or tiredness. One important rule: never put them into the water at a real onsen or a public bath. They're only for your own tub. I think nyuyokuzai show how much people in Japan love the onsen feeling, even at home.

Can I use bath salts at a hotel or ryokan?
ホテルや旅館で入浴剤を使ってもいいですか。
In the private bathtub in your room, it's usually fine. But never put them into a shared bath, an onsen or a public bath, because everyone uses the same water. If you're not sure, ask the staff first.
部屋に付いている自分専用の浴槽なら、たいていは大丈夫です。でも、大浴場や温泉、銭湯には絶対に入れないでください。みんなが同じお湯を使うからです。分からないときは、先にスタッフに聞いてください。
Do the hot spring powders contain real hot spring water?
温泉ふうの入浴剤には、本物の温泉のお湯が入っているのですか。
Usually not. Most of them copy the color and smell of a famous hot spring using ordinary ingredients. Some products use minerals collected at a real spring, so check the label if that matters to you.
たいていは入っていません。多くは、ふつうの原料で有名な温泉の色やにおいをまねたものです。本物の温泉でとれた成分を使った商品もあるので、気になるなら表示を確かめてください。
