On some spring mornings in Japan, the sky over even a clean, rural area looks faintly dirty, as if seen through a thin yellowish film, and it isn't smog from a nearby city. It's kosa, dust lifted from deserts on the Asian continent — mainly the Gobi Desert and the drylands of northern China and Mongolia — where strong spring winds pick up fine particles and loft them high enough to ride the jet stream. A day or two later, the same dust settles over Japan, sometimes visible as a haze, sometimes only detectable as grit on cars, windows and balcony railings.
It is entirely natural, unlike PM2.5 industrial pollution, though the two can travel together and their health effects can compound, so forecasts treat kosa and fine particulate pollution as related but separate categories. The Environment Ministry and the weather agency both issue kosa forecasts in spring, recommending that people with asthma or other respiratory conditions limit time outdoors, keep windows closed, and wear a mask on heavy-dust days.
