英語を話す人は世界で約15億人いますが、そのうち英語を母語とする人は4億人に届きません（エスノローグ、2025年）。
2026年10月30日時点で、W3Techsが内容の言語を判定できたウェブサイトのうち、49.5パーセントが英語、4.9パーセントが日本語でした（W3Techs）。
日本では2020年度から、小学5・6年生で英語が正式な教科になり、3・4年生でも「外国語活動」が始まりました。
東南アジア諸国連合（ASEAN）は、2008年に発効したASEAN憲章で、英語を作業言語と定めています。
グーグル翻訳は2006年に始まり、2016年からニューラルネットワークを使う方式を取り入れ始めました。2024年には、一度に110の言語が追加されました。
2025年の訪日外国人の数（訪日外客数）は約4,268万人で、前の年の記録（2024年の約3,687万人）を上回り、過去最多となりました（日本政府観光局）。

賛成の理由 For

English is spoken by about 1.5 billion people, so it helps students communicate with people from many different countries.英語は約15億人に話されているので、さまざまな国の人と意思を伝え合うのに役立つ。
English is widely used on the internet, so students who can read it can access a much wider range of information online.英語はインターネットで広く使われているので、英語が読める生徒は、ネット上のずっと幅広い情報にふれられる。
Learning another language also teaches students about different cultures, which helps them understand and respect people with different values.外国語を学ぶと、ちがう文化についても学べるので、価値観のちがう人を理解し、尊重するのに役立つ。

I do not think AI translation will make learning foreign languages unnecessary. First, machine translation still makes mistakes. For example, Japanese sentences often have no subject, so a machine may choose the wrong meaning. People who know the language can notice and correct such errors. Second, speaking directly helps people build trust. When we talk with someone in their own language, we can share jokes and feelings that are often lost in translation. For these reasons, I believe that learning foreign languages will remain important even in the age of AI.
