Should the number of tourists visiting popular places in Japan be limited?

For

  • Limiting the number of visitors would protect local residents, who sometimes cannot even get on crowded buses in their own town.
  • Too many visitors can damage nature and old buildings, so limits are necessary to protect these places for future generations.
  • When a place is less crowded, tourists can enjoy it more, and they are more likely to come back and recommend it to others.

Against

  • Tourism brings money and jobs to many areas, so limiting visitors could hurt local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and shops.
  • Instead of setting limits, it would be better to encourage tourists to visit less famous areas and travel during quieter seasons.
  • Strict limits may make visitors feel unwelcome and could reduce cultural exchange between Japan and other countries.

Do you think tourists should pay extra fees to visit popular places?

I think tourists should pay extra fees to visit popular places. I have two reasons. First, large numbers of tourists increase the cost of local services such as public toilets and trash collection. A small fee would help cover these costs, so that residents would not have to pay for everything. Second, the money can be used to protect famous places. For example, fees paid by climbers on Mount Fuji can be used to make the trails safer and cleaner. For these reasons, I believe that tourists should pay extra fees at popular places.

Agree or disagree: Japan should limit the number of tourists who visit its most popular destinations.

I agree that Japan should limit the number of tourists who visit its most popular destinations, mainly for two reasons. First, limits are necessary to protect the daily lives of local residents. In some popular cities, buses have become so crowded with tourists that residents cannot get on them, and people also suffer from noise and trash. If the number of visitors were controlled through reservation systems, residents could live more comfortably. Second, limits would help preserve nature and cultural sites. Too many visitors can damage mountain trails, coral reefs, and old wooden buildings. On Iriomote Island, for example, the number of people allowed into certain areas each day is already limited in order to protect the forest. In conclusion, although tourism is important for the economy, reasonable limits are needed to protect both residents and the places that tourists come to see.
