Disasters

Should schools spend more time on disaster education?

For

  • Regular drills help students act quickly without hesitating, as the children in Kamaishi showed during the 2011 tsunami.
  • Students can share what they learn with their families, so disaster education at school can help protect the whole community.
  • Japan experiences many earthquakes and disasters caused by heavy rain, so knowing how to protect yourself is a basic life skill.

Against

  • Schools already have many subjects to teach, so adding more disaster lessons may reduce the time for other important studies.
  • Children spend much of their time outside school, so families and local communities should take the main responsibility for disaster education.
  • Disaster risks differ from town to town, so schools should improve the quality of their lessons rather than simply add more hours.

Do you think schools should hold more disaster drills?

I think schools should hold more disaster drills. First, regular practice helps students act quickly in an emergency. In 2011, many students in Kamaishi survived the tsunami because they had practiced running to higher ground again and again. Second, students can share what they learn with their families. If children explain where to evacuate and what to carry, their parents and grandparents will also be better prepared. For these reasons, I believe more drills at school would help protect not only students but also the whole community.

Agree or disagree: The Japanese government should spend more money on preparing for natural disasters.

I agree that the Japanese government should spend more money on preparing for natural disasters. To begin with, the risk of disasters is growing. Because of climate change, extremely heavy rain has become more frequent, and experts also warn of a huge earthquake along the Nankai Trough. Investing now in stronger riverbanks, earthquake-resistant buildings, and better warning systems would reduce damage and save lives. Moreover, prevention is often cheaper than recovery. Rebuilding towns after a major disaster costs enormous amounts of money and can take many years, while local economies suffer in the meantime. Spending wisely in advance can therefore save money in the long run. Admittedly, individuals also need to prepare for themselves, but only the government has the resources to protect entire communities. For these reasons, I believe more public spending on disaster prevention is essential.
