Let's imagine a junior high school student named Haruto. On weekends, he helps at his grandmother's small soba shop in an old town in the mountains. Ten years ago, almost all of the customers were Japanese. Now, about half of them come from other countries.
"Hello! Where are you from?" Haruto asks in English. Last Sunday, he met a family from Australia, two students from Thailand, and an old couple from France. Haruto was nervous at first, but now he enjoys talking with them.
Haruto's town is not the only one. Visitors from abroad are now coming to many parts of Japan. In 2003, about 5 million foreign visitors came to Japan. In 2013, the number went over 10 million for the first time. Then in 2025, about 42.7 million people visited. That was the most ever.
Why are so many people coming to Japan? There are several reasons. First, it is now easier to fly here. There are more flights from cities in Asia, and some airlines sell cheap tickets. Japan also made it easier for people from some countries to get a visa.
Second, the yen has been weak in recent years. When the yen is weak, hotels, food, and shopping in Japan are cheaper for people from other countries. For many travelers, a trip to Japan feels like a good deal.
Third, many people around the world love Japanese culture. They watched anime, read manga, or ate sushi in their own countries. Now they want to see Japan with their own eyes. Beautiful photos and videos on social media also make people want to visit.
So what do visitors enjoy most? The Japan Tourism Agency asks visitors about their trips. In its survey for 2024, eating Japanese food was the thing that visitors were looking forward to most. Many visitors also enjoy shopping, walking around cities, and seeing old temples and nature. Some relax in hot springs, and others come to ski on Japan's soft snow.
A woman from France said to Haruto, "Japan is so clean, and people are very kind. And the trains always come on time!" Many visitors say the same thing.
Tourists help Japan in many ways. In 2025, they spent about 9.5 trillion yen here. Their money supports hotels, shops, and restaurants, and it creates jobs. In towns where young people are leaving, visitors can bring new life.
But there are some problems, too. Some famous places are very crowded. Buses can get so full that local people cannot get on. Some visitors do not know Japanese rules, such as how to throw away trash. Haruto's grandmother says, "We are happy to see visitors. But we also want them to respect our town."
Haruto had an idea. He made a small card in easy English with pictures. It explains the shop's rules and teaches a few Japanese words, like "Itadakimasu" and "Gochisousama." Visitors love the card. "When we learn a little about each other, everyone is happier," Haruto says.
What do you think? Some people say that Japan should welcome more tourists, because they bring money and make towns lively. Others say that Japan should not try to get too many tourists, because crowds can make life hard for local people.
