A man had three sons. The youngest was called Simpleton, and everyone laughed at him.
One day the oldest son went into the forest to cut wood. His mother gave him a fine cake and a bottle of wine. In the forest he met a little gray old man. "Please give me a piece of your cake and a drink of your wine. I'm so hungry."
"If I give you some, I'll have less for myself. Go away!" When he began to cut a tree, his axe slipped and hurt his arm, and he had to go home. The second son went the next day. He said the same thing to the little man, and the axe hit his leg.
Then Simpleton said, "Father, let me go and cut wood." At last his father said yes. His mother gave him only a cake made with water and baked in the ashes, and a bottle of sour beer.
In the forest, the little gray man asked him for food. "I only have an ash-cake and sour beer," said Simpleton, "but if you like, we can eat together." When he took out his food, the cake had become a fine sweet cake, and the beer had become good wine. They ate and drank together. "You have a good heart," said the little man. "Cut down that old tree, and you will find something at the roots."
Simpleton cut down the tree and found a goose with feathers of pure gold. He took it with him and stayed the night at an inn. The innkeeper had three daughters, and each wanted a golden feather.
The oldest girl waited until Simpleton went out. Then she grabbed the goose's wing, but her hand stuck to it! The second girl touched her sister and stuck to her. The third girl stuck to the second.
In the morning, Simpleton took the goose under his arm and left. The three girls had to run behind him. In a field they met a parson. "Shame on you, girls! Running after a young man!"
He took the youngest by the hand to pull her away, and he stuck, too. Then the sexton of the church touched the parson's sleeve and stuck. Two farmers tried to help and stuck as well. Now seven people were running behind Simpleton and his goose.
They came to a city. The king had a daughter who was so serious that no one could make her laugh. The king had said, "Anyone who makes her laugh can marry her." When the princess saw the seven people stuck together, running and falling over each other behind Simpleton, she began to laugh, and she laughed and laughed.
The king did not want Simpleton for a son-in-law, so he gave him three very hard tasks. But each time, the little gray man helped him, because Simpleton had shared his food. At last the king had to keep his word. Simpleton married the princess, and later he became king himself.
