Long ago, in the city of Baghdad, there lived a poor porter named Sinbad. One hot day, he was carrying a heavy load through the streets. He stopped to rest outside a beautiful house. From inside came the smell of delicious food and the sound of music. The porter sighed. "Life is not fair," he said. "Some people work all day and stay poor. Others never work and live like kings."
A servant came out and invited him inside. In a fine room sat an old man with a white beard. "I heard what you said," the old man told him kindly. "Sit down and eat with me. My name is also Sinbad. People call me Sinbad the Sailor. I did not become rich easily. I went on seven dangerous voyages. Let me tell you about the first one."
"When I was young," Sinbad the Sailor began, "my father died and left me a lot of money. But I was foolish, and I spent it all on fine clothes, parties, and friends. One day I woke up and found that I was almost poor. So I sold what was left and bought goods to trade. Then I joined some other merchants and sailed down the river to the sea.
"We sailed from island to island, buying and selling. One day, we came to a small island. It was green and beautiful, like a garden. The captain stopped the ship, and many of us went onto the land to rest. Some walked around, and some made fires to cook food.
"Suddenly, the captain shouted from the ship. 'Run! Come back to the ship! That is not an island. It is a giant fish!' It was true. Our island was a huge whale that had been sleeping on the top of the sea for so long that sand had covered its back and trees had grown on it. The heat of our fires had woken it up!
"The whale began to move. The men ran toward the ship. Some made it, but many did not. The whale dived down into the deep sea, and the waves closed over us. The captain was afraid, so he sailed away quickly without waiting for the rest of us.
"I was in the water, sure that I would drown. But I caught hold of a large wooden tub that the men had brought from the ship to wash in. I held on to it all day and all night. The wind and the waves carried me far away. On the next day, the sea threw me onto the shore of a real island. I was so tired that I lay on the sand like a dead man.
"When I could walk, I looked for food. I found fruit and fresh water. Then I heard a strange sound. I followed it and found a beautiful mare tied to a tree by the sea. As I looked at her, a man came out of a hole in the ground. 'Who are you?' he asked. I told him my story, and he took me into his cave and gave me food.
"He explained that he was a groom of King Mihrjan, who ruled that island. Every year, when the moon was new, the king's grooms brought his best mares to this beach. A wonderful horse came out of the sea and met them, and later the mares gave birth to colts that were faster and stronger than any others in the world.
"The groom took me to the king. King Mihrjan listened to my story with great interest. He was kind to me and gave me a job at the port. I wrote down the name of every ship that came in. I stayed there a long time, and I saw many wonders, including a fish two hundred meters long, and another with a face like an owl. But every day, I asked the sailors about Baghdad, and every day I hoped to go home.
"One day, a large ship came into the port. As the sailors carried the cargo onto the land, I saw some boxes with my own name on them. It was my ship! I went to the captain and said, 'Whose goods are these?'
"'They belonged to a merchant named Sinbad,' said the captain sadly. 'He was lost at sea with many others, when the island turned out to be a whale. I am going to sell his things and take the money to his family in Baghdad.'
"'I am Sinbad!' I cried. 'I did not drown!'
"The captain did not believe me. 'Everyone says that now,' he said. 'You heard my story and now you want the money.' So I told him everything that had happened on our journey before the whale. I told him what we had bought, what we had talked about, and what he had said to me. At last, he looked carefully at my face, and his eyes filled with tears. 'It is really you,' he said, and he hugged me.
"I gave a fine gift to King Mihrjan to thank him, and he gave me many rich presents in return. Then I sailed home. On the way, I sold my goods and made a great deal of money. When I arrived in Baghdad, I was richer than ever. I bought this house, and I promised myself that I would never go to sea again."
Old Sinbad smiled and gave the porter a hundred gold coins. "But of course," he said, "I did not keep that promise. Come back tomorrow, and I will tell you about my second voyage."
