A very long time ago in China, there were ten suns. They were the sons of the god of the east, and they lived in a huge tree beyond the sea. Every day, one sun took a turn to cross the sky, and the other nine rested. In this way, the Earth was warm, but not too hot.
But one day, the ten suns grew bored. "Let's all go up into the sky together," they said. "It will be fun!" So all ten of them rose into the sky at the same time.
On Earth, it was a disaster. The heat was terrible. Rivers dried up, plants died, and the ground cracked. People hid in caves, and many of them died from hunger and thirst. The suns only laughed and played.
At that time, there lived a great archer named Hou Yi. He was the best archer in the world, and he was strong and brave. The emperor asked him to save the people. Hou Yi climbed to the top of a high mountain. He took his red bow and his white arrows. He shouted at the suns, "Go back! Only one of you may stay in the sky!" But the suns did not listen.
So Hou Yi pulled his bow and shot. One sun fell from the sky and turned into a three-legged black crow. He shot again, and another fell. One by one, he shot down nine of the suns. When he was about to shoot the last one, the people cried, "Stop! We need one sun for light and warmth!" So Hou Yi put down his bow. Only one sun was left, and it has crossed the sky alone ever since.
The people were saved, and Hou Yi became a great hero. He had a beautiful and kind wife named Chang'e, and they loved each other very much. Many people came to Hou Yi to learn how to shoot.
One day, Hou Yi went to the Kunlun Mountains to visit the Queen Mother of the West, a powerful goddess. She was grateful to him for saving the world, so she gave him a special gift. It was a small bottle of elixir. "If you drink this," she said, "you will become immortal and rise up to heaven to live with the gods."
But Hou Yi did not want to live forever without his wife. "There is only enough for one person," he thought. "I will not drink it." He went home and gave the bottle to Chang'e, and she hid it in a box in their bedroom.
Among Hou Yi's students was a bad man named Peng Meng. He had seen the gift, and he wanted it for himself. One day, Hou Yi went out hunting with his other students. Peng Meng stayed at home, saying that he was sick. When Hou Yi had gone, Peng Meng took his sword and went into the house. "Give me the elixir!" he shouted at Chang'e.
Chang'e knew that she could not fight him. But she could not let a bad man become immortal. So she took the bottle from its box, and before Peng Meng could stop her, she drank all of the elixir.
At once, her body became light, as light as a feather. Her feet left the floor. She floated out of the window and up into the sky. Higher and higher she went, past the clouds and into the night. She did not want to go far from her husband, so she chose to stop on the moon, the place in heaven that was nearest to the Earth.
When Hou Yi came home, he heard what had happened from the servants. Peng Meng had already run away. Hou Yi ran outside and looked up at the sky, calling his wife's name. The moon was very big and bright that night, and on it, he thought he could see the shape of Chang'e looking down at him.
Hou Yi was very sad. He took a table into the garden, under the moon. On it he put Chang'e's favorite foods and fruits, and he lit candles and incense. He hoped that she could see them and know that he still loved her.
When the people heard the story, they did the same thing. They put out food and cakes under the full moon and prayed for Chang'e. They also prayed for good luck and for their families to be together.
That is how the Mid-Autumn Festival began. Even today, on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest, families in China and around the world get together. They eat round mooncakes and look up at the moon. Some people say that if you look carefully, you can still see Chang'e in her cold palace on the moon, with a white jade rabbit by her side to keep her company.
