Long ago in Korea, there lived two brothers. The older brother was Nolbu, and the younger brother was Heungbu. They were very different. Nolbu was greedy and unkind. He thought only about money. Heungbu was gentle and kind, and he always tried to help others.
When their father died, he left a large house and many rice fields. Nolbu took everything for himself. "Get out of my house," he said to Heungbu. "And take your wife and children with you. I will not feed you anymore."
So Heungbu and his family left with nothing. They built a tiny house from straw. It was so small that when Heungbu lay down to sleep, his feet stuck out of the door. Heungbu worked hard every day, but he had many children, and they were always hungry.
One spring day, a pair of swallows came and made a nest under the roof of Heungbu's little house. Soon, there were baby birds in the nest. Heungbu and his children loved to watch them.
One afternoon, Heungbu heard the parent birds crying loudly. A big snake was climbing up toward the nest! Heungbu ran out and chased the snake away with a stick. But one of the baby swallows had fallen from the nest. It lay on the ground, and its little leg was broken.
"Poor little bird," said Heungbu. He picked it up gently. His wife brought a piece of cloth, and Heungbu carefully put a bandage around the broken leg. Every day, the family gave it food and water. Slowly, the leg got better. When autumn came, the little swallow could fly again, and it flew away to the south with the others.
The next spring, the swallow came back. It flew down to Heungbu and dropped a small seed in front of him. Then it sang a happy song and flew away.
"This is a gourd seed," said Heungbu. He planted it next to his house. The seed grew very fast. Soon, the plant covered the whole roof. By autumn, there were three huge gourds on it, each one as big as a large pot.
"Let us cut open the gourds," said Heungbu to his wife. "We can eat the inside, and we can use the outside to make bowls." So they took a saw and began to cut the first gourd.
When the gourd opened, rice poured out of it. There was so much rice that it filled the whole yard! The children shouted with joy. Then they cut the second gourd. Out came gold, silver, and beautiful silk. And from the third gourd came workers with tools, and in a moment they built a large and beautiful house with a tile roof.
Heungbu was now a rich man. But he did not change. He was still gentle and kind, and he shared his rice and money with all the poor people in the village.
Soon, Nolbu heard the news. He ran to Heungbu's new house. "How did you get so rich?" he shouted. "Did you steal it?" Heungbu was honest, so he told his brother the whole story about the swallow.
Nolbu went home and thought, "I will get a magic seed too. And I will get much more gold than my stupid little brother." He waited for swallows to come to his house. When a baby swallow was in the nest, Nolbu took it out and broke its leg on purpose. Then he put a bandage on it. "Now get better," he said, "and bring me my seed."
The next spring, the swallow came back and dropped a seed in front of Nolbu. Nolbu laughed and planted it. Again, the plant grew fast, and by autumn there were three huge gourds on his roof.
Nolbu took a saw and cut open the first gourd. But no rice came out. Out came a crowd of angry goblins with clubs. "You owe us money!" they shouted, and they took all the money from his house.
"Maybe the next gourd is the gold one," said Nolbu, and he cut the second gourd. Out came men who said he had to pay many debts, and they took his rice and his furniture.
"The third one must be the treasure!" cried Nolbu. He cut the third gourd. Out came a great flood of dirty, smelly water. It filled the house and washed away everything that was left. Nolbu and his wife ran outside with only the clothes they were wearing.
Nolbu had nothing now. He had nowhere to go. At last, with his head down, he went to his brother's house.
Heungbu opened the door. He did not shout at his brother. He did not say, "It's your own fault." He only said, "Come in, brother. You must be cold and hungry." He gave Nolbu a warm room, good food, and new clothes.
Nolbu began to cry. "I was so cruel to you," he said. "And you are so kind to me." From that day, Nolbu changed. He became a kind and generous man, and the two brothers lived happily together for the rest of their lives.
