Dorothy lived in the middle of the great grey prairies of Kansas with her Uncle Henry, her Aunt Em, and her little black dog, Toto. Everything around them was grey. Only Toto was not grey, and he made Dorothy laugh every day.
One day a terrible cyclone came. Aunt Em and Uncle Henry ran into the cellar, but Dorothy was too late. The wind lifted the whole house high into the sky, with Dorothy and Toto inside it. They flew for hours, and at last Dorothy fell asleep.
She woke with a bump. The house had landed in a beautiful country full of flowers. Some little people in blue, the Munchkins, came toward her with a little old woman, the Good Witch of the North.
"Thank you for killing the Wicked Witch of the East," said the old woman. Dorothy was shocked. Then she saw two feet sticking out from under her house, wearing silver shoes. Her house had landed on the Wicked Witch!
Soon only the silver shoes were left, and the Good Witch gave them to Dorothy. "There is some charm in them," she said, "but we never knew what it is."
"I just want to go home to Kansas," said Dorothy. "Can you help me?"
Nobody knew the way. "You must go to the Emerald City," said the Good Witch. "Ask the great Wizard of Oz to help you. Follow the road of yellow brick." She kissed Dorothy on the forehead, which left a round, shining mark. "Now no one will dare to hurt you."
So Dorothy put on the silver shoes and set off with Toto down the yellow brick road. In a cornfield she met a Scarecrow. "I have no brains," he said sadly. "My head is stuffed with straw." He decided to come along and ask the Wizard for some brains.
In a forest they found a man made of tin, standing perfectly still with his axe in the air. He had rusted in the rain. Dorothy oiled his joints, and he could move again. "I have no heart," said the Tin Woodman. "I would like to ask Oz for one."
Then a great Lion jumped out of the trees with a terrible roar. When he tried to bite Toto, Dorothy slapped his nose. "You ought to be ashamed of yourself," she said, "a big beast like you, biting a poor little dog!"
The Lion began to cry. "I know," he said. "I'm a coward. I have no courage at all." So the Cowardly Lion joined them too.
After many adventures, they reached the Emerald City. At the gate, the Guardian locked green glasses over their eyes, so that everything looked bright green. The great Wizard saw each of them alone. To Dorothy he appeared as a huge head with no body. To the Scarecrow he was a lovely lady, to the Tin Woodman a terrible beast, and to the Lion a ball of fire. He said the same thing to each of them: "First you must kill the Wicked Witch of the West."
The Wicked Witch of the West had only one eye, but she saw them coming from far away. She sent wolves, crows and bees to stop them, but they failed. At last she used her golden cap to call the Winged Monkeys. The monkeys broke the Tin Woodman and pulled the straw out of the Scarecrow, and carried Dorothy and the Lion to the witch's castle.
The witch made Dorothy work in her kitchen. She wanted Dorothy's magic silver shoes very badly. One day she tricked Dorothy and stole one of the shoes. Dorothy was so angry that she picked up a bucket of water and threw it over the witch.
At once the witch began to melt away like brown sugar. "See what you have done!" she screamed. "In a minute I shall melt away." And soon there was nothing left but a brown puddle on the floor.
Dorothy set the Lion free, the witch's servants mended her friends, and they all returned to the Emerald City. But when they went into the throne room, Toto knocked over a screen in the corner. Behind it stood a little old man with a bald head.
"I am Oz, the Great and Terrible," he said in a shaking voice. "But I'm just a common man. I was a balloon man in a circus, and one day my balloon flew away and brought me here."
But he filled the Scarecrow's head with bran mixed with pins and needles, for sharp brains. He gave the Tin Woodman a red silk heart, filled with sawdust. And he gave the Lion a green drink, which he said was courage. Then Oz made a new balloon to take Dorothy home. But just before they left, Toto ran after a cat. Dorothy ran to catch him, and the balloon rose into the sky without her.
At last Dorothy and her friends travelled south to see Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. Glinda smiled at her. "Your silver shoes will carry you over the desert," she said. "If you had known their power, you could have gone back to your Aunt Em on the very first day. Just knock the heels together three times and tell the shoes where you want to go."
Dorothy hugged her friends goodbye. Then she took Toto in her arms, knocked her heels together three times, and said, "Take me home to Aunt Em!"
She whirled through the air, and when she stopped, she was sitting on the grass of the Kansas prairie, and Aunt Em was running toward her. The silver shoes had fallen off in the air and were lost forever. But Dorothy did not care.
"My darling child!" cried Aunt Em, covering her with kisses. "Where in the world did you come from?"
"From the Land of Oz," said Dorothy. "And oh, Aunt Em, I'm so glad to be at home again!"
