Sarah was a typist in New York. She did not have a big office or many customers. She worked alone in a small rented room with an old typewriter. She earned very little money, but she had found a clever way to get good food.
Near her room was Schulenberg's Home Restaurant. Its menus were written by hand, and they were very hard to read. One day Sarah went to Mr. Schulenberg and made a deal. Every evening she would type his menus for the next day, twenty-one copies, one for each table. In return, he would send her three meals a day. A waiter brought them up to her room. Both of them were happy with the deal.
The menus also told Sarah about the seasons. In the city, it is hard to see the seasons change. But when the menu said "roast pork," it was winter. When it said "strawberries," summer was near.
Last summer Sarah had gone to the country for two weeks. She stayed at a farm called Sunnybrook Farm. There she met Walter Franklin, a young farmer. They walked in the fields together, and they fell in love. One day Walter made a crown of yellow dandelions and put it on her hair. "You look like a queen," he said.
Before Sarah went back to the city, Walter asked her to marry him. "We'll be married in the spring," he said. "As soon as the dandelions come again."
Now it was March, and spring was coming. But Sarah had not heard from Walter for two weeks. She was worried and sad. Was he sick? Had he forgotten her?
That evening Sarah sat down to type the menus. Outside, the city was cold and grey. She typed slowly, and tears came into her eyes.
Then she came to the vegetables. On Mr. Schulenberg's list was a new spring dish: "Dandelions with hard-boiled eggs." Dandelions! Sarah remembered the yellow crown and Walter's kind face. Her tears fell on the keys, and she could not see the words she was typing. But somehow she finished all twenty-one menus.
The waiter took the menus to the restaurant. Sarah sat by her window, sad and alone. When her dinner came, there were dandelions on the plate. She could not eat them.
At seven o'clock a young man walked into Schulenberg's restaurant. He looked tired and unhappy. He had come to New York three days before to find Sarah. He had written to her, but she had moved to a new room, and his letter had come back. He had looked everywhere for her. Even the police could not help him. The city was too big.
He sat down at a table and picked up the menu without much interest. Then he suddenly sat up straight. He read one line again and again. Then he jumped up and took the menu to Mr. Schulenberg. "Who typed this?" he asked. "Where does she live?"
A few minutes later there was a knock on Sarah's door. She opened it. There stood Walter Franklin.
"Walter!" she cried. "Why didn't you write?"
"I did write," said Walter, holding her hands. "But you had moved. I've been looking for you for three days. New York is so big! And then I found you on a menu."
"On a menu? What do you mean?"
Walter took the menu out of his pocket and showed her. Under the vegetables there was a line that she did not remember typing. It did not say "Dandelions with hard-boiled eggs." Her sad heart had made her fingers type something else. It said: "Dearest Walter, with hard-boiled eggs."
