After the American Civil War, the members of the Gun Club in Baltimore were very bored. They loved to make big guns, but now there was peace. "What can we do?" they cried. Then their president, Impey Barbicane, had a wonderful idea. "Let us shoot a giant ball to the Moon!"
Everyone loved the idea. Scientists said it was possible, but the gun had to be enormous. Barbicane decided to build it in Florida, because there the Moon passes high overhead. Money came from countries all over the world. Thousands of workers dug a huge hole, nine hundred feet deep, and lined its sides with hot, melted iron. This was the great cannon, the Columbiad.
Not everyone was happy. Captain Nicholl made thick iron plates for warships, and he was Barbicane's old enemy. "Your ball will never reach the Moon," he said, and he made large bets against the plan.
Then a telegram arrived from Paris. "Make the ball hollow. I will go inside it. Michel Ardan." Soon a cheerful Frenchman with wild hair arrived in Florida. Everyone loved him at once. "Why not travel to the Moon?" he said. "We will be the first."
Nicholl was so angry that he challenged Barbicane to a duel in a forest. But Michel found them in time. When he found Nicholl, the captain was gently freeing a little bird from a spider's web. "Why fight?" said Michel. "Come to the Moon with me, both of you!" The two enemies looked at each other, and they agreed.
The ball, made of light aluminum, was now a small room with soft walls, windows, food, water, air and even two dogs. On the evening of December first, the three men climbed in. A huge crowd waited in silence. At exactly the right moment, the great gun fired. The ground shook, and a storm of fire and smoke filled the sky. For days afterward, clouds covered the sky, and nobody could see where the ball had gone.
Inside, the three travelers woke up. They were alive, and they were flying through space! They looked back and saw the Earth growing smaller. They laughed, ate and argued about science. At one point, where the Earth and the Moon pulled equally, they floated in the air like feathers.
But a large meteor passed near them and pushed them off their course. They did not land on the Moon. Instead, they went around it. They saw its mountains and craters very close, shining white in the sunlight. Then they passed into the cold darkness on the side where the Sun did not shine.
"We cannot land," said Barbicane. "If we do nothing, we will go around the Moon forever." The men fired rockets under the ball. Slowly it began to fall, not toward the Moon, but back toward the Earth!
Faster and faster they fell. On an American ship in the Pacific Ocean, the sailors saw a bright light drop from the sky into the sea. Everyone thought that the travelers must be dead. But the ball was light, and it floated! Some days later, when a ship found it, the three friends were inside, happily playing a game of dominoes.
They came home as heroes. They had not walked on the Moon, but they had traveled around it and returned. And the two old enemies, Barbicane and Nicholl, were now the best of friends.
