A dog and a rooster lived on the same farm, and they had been best friends for years. One day they decided to leave the farm and see the world. "There must be more to life than this old yard," said the rooster. "Let us travel together and have adventures." The dog wagged his tail. "Wherever you go," he said, "I will go too."
They walked all day, through fields and villages and along quiet country roads. When night came, they found themselves in a thick, dark forest. "We will have to sleep here," said the dog. He found a big old tree with a hollow trunk. There was a hole at the bottom which was just large enough for a dog, so he crawled inside and curled up.
The rooster flew up and sat on a branch high above him. "Good night, my friend," they said to each other, and soon they were both asleep.
When the first light of morning appeared in the sky, the rooster woke up, as roosters always do. He stretched his wings, lifted his head, and crowed with all his might. "Cock-a-doodle-doo! Cock-a-doodle-doo!" The sound rang through the forest.
Not far away, a fox heard it. His ears stood up. "A rooster," he thought, and his mouth began to water. "A fat, tasty rooster, all alone in the forest. What a wonderful breakfast that would be!"
He followed the sound until he came to the tree. He looked up and saw the rooster sitting on the branch, much too high to reach. "I will have to use my brain," the fox thought, and he put on his friendliest smile.
"Good morning!" he called up. "What a beautiful voice you have! I have never heard such lovely singing in all my life, so I simply had to come and meet the singer. Please come down so that we can shake hands. I would like to be your friend."
The rooster looked down at the fox's sharp teeth and hungry eyes. He was not a fool. But he was polite, and he had an idea.
"Thank you, sir," he said. "You are very kind, and I would love to meet you. But I cannot open the door myself. My porter is sleeping at the bottom of this tree. Would you be so good as to go around and wake him up? Then he will open the door and let you in."
"Of course!" said the fox, who was delighted. "What a fine gentleman you are, to have your own porter!" He hurried around the tree, found the hole at the bottom and put his head inside. "Excuse me," he said. "Wake up! Your master wants you to open the door."
The porter woke up and opened his eyes. Then he opened his big mouth and gave a great, deep bark.
The fox jumped back in shock. Out of the hole came the dog, growling and showing his teeth. The fox turned and ran for his life, and the dog chased him through the trees until he was far, far away. The fox did not stop running until he reached his own den, and he did not come back to that part of the forest for a very long time.
When the dog returned, the rooster flew down from his branch. "Thank you, porter," he said with a laugh. "You opened the door beautifully." The dog laughed too. Then the two friends went on their way, ready for their next adventure.
