The lion was the king of all the animals. He was strong and handsome, with sharp teeth, powerful claws and a golden mane that shone in the sun. When he roared, the whole forest went silent. Every animal was afraid of him.
But the lion had a secret, and it made him very unhappy. Every morning, at a farm on the edge of the forest, a rooster stood on the fence and crowed. And every morning, when the lion heard that loud "cock-a-doodle-doo," his heart jumped, and he wanted to run and hide.
One day the lion could not stand it any longer. He looked up at the sky and called to Jupiter, the king of the gods.
"Jupiter!" he roared. "It is true that you have made me strong and handsome. You have given me teeth and claws, and I rule over all the animals of the forest. But what a shame it is that I, the great lion, am frightened by the crowing of a rooster! Why did you make me like this?"
Jupiter's voice came down from the clouds like thunder. "Why do you blame me?" he said. "I have given you everything that I could give. You are brave in every way except this one. Is that not enough?"
The lion did not answer. He lay down under a tree and groaned. "Jupiter is right," he thought. "The fault is mine. I am a coward. A king who is afraid of a rooster is not a real king. I wish I were dead."
As he lay there feeling sorry for himself, an elephant came walking slowly through the trees. The lion and the elephant were old friends, so the lion got up and went to talk with him.
While they were talking, the lion noticed something strange. Every few moments, the elephant shook his huge ears. Then he looked around nervously, and shook them again.
"My friend," said the lion, "what is the matter? Why do you keep shaking your ears like that?"
Just at that moment, a tiny gnat flew past and landed on the elephant's head. The elephant's eyes grew wide with fear.
"Do you see that little buzzing insect?" he whispered. "That is what I am afraid of. If it flies into my ear, I will go mad with pain. It may even kill me. I cannot rest for a single minute while it is near me."
The lion stared at the tiny gnat, and then at the huge elephant. The elephant was much bigger than he was. He was stronger than any animal in the forest. And yet he was afraid of something smaller than a seed.
Suddenly the lion began to laugh. It was the first time he had laughed in many days.
"What is so funny?" asked the elephant.
"Nothing, my friend, nothing," said the lion. "I have just learned something important. I have been complaining about a rooster, which is quite a large bird. But you, the biggest animal in the world, are afraid of a gnat. I will never complain again, and I will never wish that I were dead. I am much luckier than I thought."
From that day on, the lion still did not enjoy the sound of the rooster in the morning. But each time he heard it, he remembered the elephant and the gnat, and he smiled.
