Once upon a time a king and a queen lived happily together with their twelve children, who were all boys. One day the king said to his wife, "If our thirteenth child is a girl, the twelve boys must die, so that she will have all the riches and the whole kingdom for herself." He had twelve coffins made and put them in a locked room, and he gave the key to the queen. He told her to say nothing about it to anyone.
The queen sat and cried all day. Her youngest son, Benjamin, who was always with her, asked, "Dear mother, why are you so sad?" At first she would not tell him, but he kept asking. At last she unlocked the room and showed him the twelve coffins.
"My dearest Benjamin," she said, "your father has had these made for you and your eleven brothers. If I have a little girl, you will all be killed." Benjamin comforted her. "Don't cry, dear mother. We will save ourselves. We will go into the forest."
"Go into the forest with your brothers," said the queen. "One of you must always sit in the highest tree and watch the castle tower. If I have a son, I will put a white flag on the tower, and you may come home. If I have a daughter, I will put up a red flag. Then run away as fast as you can, and may God protect you."
The brothers went into the forest and took turns watching from the top of a tall oak tree. On the twelfth day it was Benjamin's turn, and he saw a flag go up on the tower. It was not white, but red. When the brothers heard this, they became very angry. "Must we lose our home because of a girl?" they cried. And they swore that they would never forgive any girl they met.
They went deeper into the forest, and in the very middle of it they found a little empty house that was under a spell. "We will live here," they said. "Benjamin, you are the youngest and the weakest. You will stay home and keep house. The rest of us will go out and find food." So the brothers hunted in the forest, and Benjamin cooked the meals. They lived there together for ten years, and the time did not seem long to them.
Meanwhile, the little daughter grew up. She had a kind heart and a beautiful face, and a gold star shone on her forehead. One day she found twelve small shirts in the washing. "Whose shirts are these?" she asked her mother. "They are too small for Father."
The queen sighed and told her about her twelve brothers. "Where are they?" asked the girl. "I will go and look for them." She took the twelve shirts and went straight into the forest.
She walked all day, and in the evening she came to the little house. Benjamin was there alone. He was amazed to see such a beautiful girl in royal clothes with a star on her forehead. "Where do you come from?" he asked. "I am a king's daughter," she said, "and I am looking for my twelve brothers." Then she showed him the shirts, and he knew that she was his sister.
"I am Benjamin, your youngest brother," he said, and they cried and kissed each other. "But there is a problem," he said. "We have sworn never to forgive any girl, because we had to leave our kingdom because of a girl." "Then I will gladly suffer," she said, "if I can save my twelve brothers." "No," said Benjamin. "Hide under this tub until they come. I will talk to them."
When the brothers came home and sat down to eat, Benjamin said, "Do you know any news?" "No," they said. "I know something," said Benjamin. "But first you must promise that you will not harm the first girl we meet." "Yes, we promise," they all said. "Our sister is here," said Benjamin, and he lifted the tub. The princess came out in her royal clothes with the gold star on her forehead, and she was so lovely and gentle that they all loved her at once.
From then on, she stayed at home with Benjamin and helped him with the work. Next to the little house was a garden where twelve white lilies grew. One day she wanted to give each brother a flower at dinner, so she picked all twelve. At that very moment the twelve brothers turned into twelve ravens and flew away over the forest. The house and the garden disappeared, too.
The poor girl was alone in the wild forest. When she looked around, an old woman was standing near her. "My child, what have you done?" said the old woman. "Why didn't you leave those white flowers alone? They were your brothers. Now they will be ravens forever."
"Is there no way to save them?" cried the girl. "There is only one way," said the old woman, "but it is so hard that you will not be able to do it. For seven years you must not speak and must not laugh. If you say a single word, even one hour before the seven years are over, your brothers will die."
The girl said in her heart, "I am sure I can do it." She climbed a tall tree, sat in it and began to spin, and she neither spoke nor laughed. One day a king was hunting in the forest, and his dog ran barking to the tree. The king saw the beautiful princess with the gold star on her forehead, and he asked her to be his wife. She did not say a word, but she nodded her head. So he took her home to his palace, and they were married.
But the king's mother was a wicked woman, and she began to say bad things about the young queen. "This girl you brought home is only a beggar," she said. "Who knows what wicked plans she has? She never speaks and never laughs. Only people with a bad conscience never laugh." At first the king would not listen, but she went on saying it for so long that at last he believed her. The young queen was sentenced to die in the fire.
A great fire was prepared, and the king stood at the window with tears in his eyes, because he still loved her. The queen was tied to a post, and the first flames were just beginning to rise. At that moment the last minute of the seven years came to an end. A sound of wings was heard in the air, and twelve ravens came flying down. As soon as they touched the ground, they became her twelve brothers.
They pulled the wood away, put out the fire, set their dear sister free and kissed her. Now that she was allowed to speak, she told the king why she had been silent and had never laughed. The king was overjoyed to hear that she was innocent. The wicked mother was sent away and was never seen again, and the king and the queen lived happily for many years with her twelve brothers.
