When Mr. Hiram B. Otis, the American Minister, bought Canterville Chase, everyone told him he was making a foolish mistake. The old house was haunted. Even Lord Canterville, who was selling it, felt he had to warn him. "My great-aunt has never really recovered," he said, "since two skeleton hands touched her shoulders one evening while she was dressing for dinner."
"My lord," answered Mr. Otis, "I will take the furniture and the ghost at a fair price. In America we can buy anything we want. If Europe really had a ghost, one of our museums would buy it and put it on show within a year." Lord Canterville smiled. "I am afraid the ghost exists," he said. "Just remember that I warned you."
So the Otis family moved in. There was Mr. Otis and his handsome wife, and their eldest son, Washington. There was Virginia, a sweet fifteen-year-old girl with large blue eyes, who rode her pony better than any boy. And there were the twins, two lively little boys who were always full of mischief.
As they drove up to the house, the bright July sky grew suddenly dark, and a great black bird flew silently over their heads. An old housekeeper, Mrs. Umney, served them tea in the library. There Mrs. Otis noticed a dull red stain on the floor beside the fireplace. "I'm afraid something has been spilled there," she said.
"Yes, madam," whispered the housekeeper. "Blood has been spilled on that spot. Lady Eleanore de Canterville was murdered there by her own husband, Sir Simon, in 1575. Nine years later Sir Simon vanished, and his body was never found. But his guilty spirit still walks the house, and the stain can never be removed."
"Nonsense," cried Washington. "Pinkerton's Champion Stain Remover will clean it up in no time." Before anyone could stop him, he was scrubbing the floor, and in a few moments the stain was gone. At that very moment a terrible flash of lightning lit up the room, a crash of thunder shook the house, and Mrs. Umney fainted.
The next morning the stain was back. Washington cleaned it again, and the following morning it was there once more. That night, the family learned the truth.
At one o'clock, Mr. Otis was woken by the clank of metal in the corridor outside his room. He got up calmly, put on his slippers, took a small bottle, and opened the door. There in the pale moonlight stood an old man of terrible appearance. His eyes were as red as burning coals, long gray hair fell over his shoulders, and heavy rusty chains hung from his wrists and ankles.
"My dear sir," said Mr. Otis, "I really must ask you to oil those chains. Here is a bottle of Tammany Rising Sun Lubricator. It is said to work perfectly after only one use. I will leave it by the candles, and there is more if you need it." Then he went back to bed.
For a moment the Canterville ghost stood frozen with anger. Then he dashed the bottle to the floor and fled down the corridor, groaning and glowing a ghostly green. But at the top of the great oak staircase, a door flew open, two little figures in white appeared, and a large pillow whizzed past his head. The twins! The ghost escaped through the wall.
In his secret little room, he leaned against a moonbeam. Never, in three hundred years, had he been so insulted. He thought of his great triumphs. There were the four maids who had screamed for hours when he grinned at them through the bed curtains. And now these Americans offered him oil! He swore a terrible revenge.
But nothing worked. The family simply did not believe in being frightened. When the stain kept coming back, they made a game of guessing its color. Some mornings it was dull red, some mornings bright scarlet, once it was a rich purple, and one morning it was emerald green. Only Virginia did not laugh. The stain always seemed to make her a little sad. She also noticed that her box of paints was slowly growing empty.
One night the ghost tried his most famous demon laugh, the laugh that had once turned a man's hair white overnight. A bedroom door opened, and Mrs. Otis came out. "I'm afraid you are not well," she said kindly. "Here is a bottle of Dr. Dobell's medicine. It is excellent for a bad stomach."
A few nights later, as the ghost turned a dark corner, he stopped and screamed. In front of him stood a horrible figure in a white sheet. Its head was a hollow turnip, carved into a grinning face, with a candle burning inside it. The ghost fled in terror. In the morning he crept back and found only a broom, a sheet and a turnip. On its chest hung a card that said, "The Only True and Original Ghost. Beware of Imitations." The twins had tricked him.
After that, the twins gave him no peace. They tied strings across the dark corridors to trip him. They spread butter on the stairs, and he slid all the way down. Once a jug of cold water fell on him from the top of a door, and he caught a terrible cold. At last the poor ghost gave up. He walked only in soft slippers, and he even oiled his chains with the Rising Sun Lubricator.
One autumn afternoon, Virginia found him sitting alone by an upstairs window, watching the yellow leaves fall. He looked so tired and miserable that she forgot to be afraid. "I am so sorry for you," she said gently. "My brothers are going back to school tomorrow. If you behave yourself, nobody will annoy you." "Behave myself?" said the ghost. "I must rattle my chains and groan at night. It is my only reason for existing."
"It is no reason at all," said Virginia. "You were very wicked. You killed your wife." "That was a family matter," said the ghost proudly. "And her brothers punished me for it. They locked me in a secret room until I died of hunger." "Oh, poor ghost!" cried Virginia. Then her eyes flashed. "But it was you who took my paints! Whoever heard of green blood?" "What could I do?" said the ghost. "Your brother started it with his Champion Stain Remover."
Then his voice grew soft and sad. "I have not slept for three hundred years, and I am so tired. Beyond the pine woods there is a little garden where the grass grows long and deep. A nightingale sings there all night, and the cold moon looks down through the branches of an old yew tree. It is the Garden of Death. How sweet it would be to lie in the soft brown earth and listen to the silence! To forget time, to forgive life, and to be at peace!"
Virginia's eyes filled with tears. "Can no one help you?" "You can," said the ghost. "Have you read the old words on the library window? They say that peace will come to this house when a golden-haired girl makes a sinner pray, when the dead almond tree blooms again, and when a little child weeps for me. Weep for my sins, because I have no tears. Pray with me for my soul, because I have no faith. Love is always with you, and Love is stronger than Death."
"You will see terrible shapes in the darkness," he warned her, "but they cannot harm you." Virginia stood up, pale but calm. "I am not afraid," she said. "I will ask the Angel to have mercy on you." The ghost bent and kissed her hand. His lips were as cold as ice, but they burned like fire. The wall slowly opened, and the two of them stepped into the darkness. Then the wall closed, and the room was empty.
When Virginia did not come down to dinner, the whole family began to search for her. They searched the house and the garden. Mr. Otis rode out with the police. The young Duke of Cheshire, who was staying with them and was deeply in love with Virginia, searched until he could hardly stand. But she was nowhere to be found.
Just as the clock struck midnight, a strange, sweet music filled the air. A panel in the wall flew open, and Virginia stepped out, very pale, with a little box in her hands. "Papa," she said quietly, "I have been with the ghost. He is dead, and you must come and see him. He was very wicked, but he was truly sorry for everything he had done. Before he died, he gave me this box of beautiful jewels."
She led them down a narrow secret passage to a small, low room with one barred window. There, chained to the wall, lay a skeleton. Its bony fingers were stretched out toward an old plate and jug that had always been just out of reach. Virginia knelt beside it and began to pray. Suddenly one of the twins cried out from the window. "Look! The dead almond tree has blossomed! I can see the flowers in the moonlight!" "God has forgiven him," said Virginia softly.
Four nights later, Sir Simon de Canterville was buried at last in the little churchyard beyond the pine woods. Virginia laid a cross of white and pink almond blossoms on his coffin. As she did so, the moon came out from behind a cloud, and somewhere in the trees a nightingale began to sing.
Years later, when Virginia had married the young Duke, they came back to Canterville and stood together beside that quiet grave. "You have never told me what happened that night," said the Duke. "Please don't ask me," said Virginia. "Poor Sir Simon! I owe him so much. Yes, don't laugh. He showed me what Life is, and what Death means, and why Love is stronger than both."
