Once upon a time, in the middle of winter, when snowflakes were falling like feathers from the sky, a queen sat sewing at a window with a frame of black ebony wood. As she looked out at the snow, she pricked her finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fell onto the snow. The red looked so beautiful on the white that she thought, "I wish I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood and as black as the wood of this window frame."
Soon afterward she had a little daughter whose skin was as white as snow, whose lips were as red as blood and whose hair was as black as ebony. She was called Snow White. But when the child was born, the queen died.
A year later the king married again. His new wife was beautiful, but she was proud and could not bear anyone to be more beautiful than she was. She had a magic mirror, and whenever she stood in front of it, she asked, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?" And the mirror always answered, "You, my queen, are the fairest of all." Then she was satisfied, because she knew the mirror always told the truth.
But Snow White grew more beautiful every year, and when she was seven years old, she was more beautiful than the queen herself. One day, when the queen asked her mirror, it answered, "You, my queen, are fair, it is true, but Snow White is far more beautiful than you."
The queen turned green with jealousy. From that hour, whenever she saw Snow White, her heart turned over inside her. Day and night she had no peace. At last she called a huntsman and said, "Take the child into the forest. I never want to see her again. Bring me proof that she is dead."
The huntsman obeyed and took Snow White into the forest. But when he drew his knife, she began to cry. "Oh, dear huntsman, let me live! I will run into the wild forest and never come home again."
Because she was so beautiful, the huntsman felt sorry for her. "Run away, then, poor child," he said. He thought the wild animals would soon find her, but still he felt as if a heavy stone had been lifted from his heart. To trick the queen, he caught a young deer and took its heart back to the castle as proof.
Now the poor child was all alone in the great forest. She ran over sharp stones and through thorns, and wild animals ran past her, but they did not hurt her. She ran as long as her feet could carry her, until it was almost evening. Then she saw a little house and went inside to rest.
Everything in the house was small, but neater and cleaner than words can say. There was a little table with seven little plates and seven little cups, and against the wall stood seven little beds covered with snow-white sheets. Snow White was so hungry that she ate a little from each plate and drank a drop from each cup, because she did not want to take everything from just one. Then she tried the beds. The seventh was just right, and she lay down in it and fell asleep.
When it was dark, the owners of the little house came home. They were seven dwarfs who dug for gold and silver in the mountains. They lit their seven candles and saw at once that someone had been there.
"Who has been sitting on my chair?" said the first. "Who has been eating from my plate?" said the second. And so on, until the seventh looked at his bed and saw Snow White lying there asleep. "What a beautiful child!" they whispered, and they were so happy that they did not wake her.
In the morning, Snow White woke up and was frightened when she saw the seven dwarfs. But they were friendly and asked her name and how she had come to their house. She told them everything. "If you will keep house for us," said the dwarfs, "cook, make the beds, wash, sew and keep everything clean, you can stay with us, and you will have everything you need." "Yes, with all my heart," said Snow White.
During the day the girl was alone, so the good dwarfs warned her, "Be careful of your stepmother. Don't let anyone in!"
Meanwhile, the queen was sure that Snow White was dead. She stood in front of her mirror and asked, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?" The mirror answered, "You, my queen, are fair, it is true, but over the hills, where the seven dwarfs dwell, Snow White is still a thousand times more beautiful than you."
The queen was horrified. She knew that the mirror never lied, and she realized that the huntsman had tricked her. She colored her face and dressed like an old peddler woman, so that no one could recognize her. Then she went over the seven hills to the house of the seven dwarfs and knocked at the door. "Pretty things for sale! Fine laces in every color!"
Snow White let the woman in and bought a pretty lace for her dress. "Let me lace you up properly, child," said the old woman, and she pulled the lace so tightly that Snow White lost her breath and fell down as if she were dead. That evening the dwarfs found her on the floor. They cut the lace, and she began to breathe again. "That old peddler was the wicked queen," they said. "Let no one in when we are not here."
When the mirror told the queen that Snow White was still alive, she made a poisoned comb, disguised herself as a different old woman and knocked again. Snow White liked the comb so much that she opened the door, and as soon as it touched her hair, she fell down senseless. Luckily, the dwarfs soon came home. They pulled out the comb, and Snow White woke up.
When the mirror gave the same answer again, the queen shook with anger. "Snow White shall die," she cried, "even if it costs me my own life!" She went into a secret room and made a poisoned apple. It looked beautiful, white with red cheeks, and anyone who saw it would want it. But one bite would be enough to kill.
Dressed as a farmer's wife, she went to the dwarfs' house once more. Snow White put her head out of the window. "I can't let anyone in. The dwarfs have told me not to." "That's all right," said the farmer's wife.
"I'll give you one of my apples as a present." "No, I mustn't take anything." "Are you afraid of poison? Look, I'll cut the apple in two. You eat the red half, and I'll eat the white half."
But the apple was made so cleverly that only the red half was poisoned. Snow White longed for the lovely apple, and when she saw the woman eating, she could not resist. She reached out her hand and took the red half. But as soon as she took a bite, she fell down on the floor.
When the dwarfs came home that evening, they found her lying there, and this time nothing could wake her. They loosened her laces, combed her hair and washed her face, but it was no use. The dear child was gone. They laid her on a bed, and all seven sat around her and cried for three days.
But she still looked so fresh, with her lovely red cheeks, that they said, "We cannot put her into the black ground." So they made a coffin of clear glass, laid her in it and carried it to the top of a mountain, where one of them always stayed to watch over her. Even the birds came and wept for Snow White.
Snow White lay in the coffin for a long, long time, and she did not change at all. She looked as if she were only sleeping. Then one day a king's son came into the forest and saw the beautiful girl in the coffin.
"Let me have the coffin," he said to the dwarfs. "I will give you anything you want for it." "We would not give it away for all the gold in the world," they answered. "Then give it to me as a gift," he said, "because I cannot live without seeing Snow White."
When he spoke like that, the good dwarfs felt sorry for him and gave him the coffin. The prince's servants lifted it onto their shoulders. But as they were carrying it away, they tripped over a bush, and the shaking knocked the piece of poisoned apple out of Snow White's throat. Soon she opened her eyes, lifted the lid of the coffin and sat up, alive again. "Oh, heavens, where am I?" she cried.
"You are with me," said the prince joyfully, and he told her everything that had happened. "I love you more than anything in the world. Come with me to my father's castle and be my wife." Snow White was willing, and she went with him, and their wedding was prepared with great splendor.
The wicked queen was also invited to the wedding, and her mirror told her that the young queen was far more beautiful than she was. She went to see the young queen, and when she recognized Snow White, she was so filled with rage and fear that she could not move. She was punished for all her wickedness and never harmed anyone again. But Snow White and her prince lived happily for many years.
