To Sherlock Holmes, she was always "the woman." He seldom spoke of her by any other name. It was not that he loved her; love was too emotional for his cold, exact mind. But in his eyes, she was above all other women. Her name was Irene Adler.
In March 1888, I, Dr. Watson, was married and had moved away from Baker Street. One evening, as I passed my friend's old rooms, I went up to see him. He looked at me and said at once, "You have been getting very wet lately, and you have a very careless servant girl." I was amazed. "How do you know?" He laughed. "On the inside of your left shoe, the leather is cut in six almost parallel lines. Someone has scraped mud off it very carelessly. You see, Watson, but you do not observe."
He showed me a letter he had received. It said that a visitor would come at a quarter to eight that evening, about a matter of the greatest importance, and that he would wear a mask. Holmes held the paper up to the light. "This paper was made in Bohemia," he said, "and the writer is German. Listen! A carriage has just stopped outside."
A very tall man came in. He wore rich but rather showy clothes: a heavy cloak lined with bright silk and boots trimmed with fur. A black mask covered the upper part of his face. He said that he was Count von Kramm. But Holmes said quietly, "Your Majesty had better sit down." The man tore off his mask. He was the King of Bohemia.
The King explained his trouble. Five years earlier, he had been in love with Irene Adler, a beautiful opera singer. Now he was going to marry a princess from Scandinavia. But Irene had a photograph of the two of them together. "If she sends it to the princess's family, the marriage will be over," he said. "She has a mind of steel. She says she will send it on the day our engagement is announced, and that is next Monday."
"Have you tried to get it back?" asked Holmes. "Five times," said the King. "Twice I paid burglars to search her house. Once we stopped her on a journey and searched her bags. But we found nothing." Holmes rubbed his hands together. "It is quite a pretty little problem," he said. The King gave him a heavy bag of gold for his expenses and the lady's address: Briony Lodge, in St. John's Wood.
The next afternoon, a drunken-looking stable worker in dirty clothes came into Holmes's room. I did not recognize him until he began to laugh. It was Holmes, in disguise. He told me a surprising story. He had helped the men who looked after horses near Irene Adler's house and listened to their gossip. Then a handsome lawyer, Godfrey Norton, had arrived in a great hurry. Soon after, he and Irene had left in two separate carriages for the Church of St. Monica, and Holmes had followed them.
"In the church," Holmes said, laughing, "Norton ran to me and cried, 'Thank God! You'll do! Come!' They needed a witness for their wedding, and I, a dirty stable worker, became the witness! The lady even gave me a gold coin for my help. I will wear it on my watch chain to remember the day."
"She is married now," Holmes went on. "That may change things. But we must act tonight. Watson, will you help me, even if it means breaking the law?" "Of course," I said.
At seven o'clock, Holmes came down dressed as an old, kind clergyman. Even his face seemed to change. We went to Briony Lodge. The street was full of men, all of whom, I learned later, had been paid by Holmes. When Irene's carriage arrived, the men began to fight about who would open its door for her. The old clergyman rushed into the crowd to protect her. He fell, and his face was covered with blood. "Bring him inside," said Irene kindly.
They laid him on a sofa in her sitting room, near the open window. Then Holmes raised his hand. That was my signal. I threw a smoke rocket into the room and shouted, "Fire!" Everyone in the street began to shout "Fire!" too. Thick smoke filled the room. A moment later, Holmes called out that it was a false alarm, and he slipped away to meet me.
"You did very well," he said, as we walked home. "When a woman thinks her house is on fire, she rushes to save the thing she values most. She ran to a hidden place behind a sliding panel, just above the bell-pull. I saw the photograph there. Tomorrow I will come back with the King, and we will take it." As we reached our door, a slim young man in a long coat hurried past us. "Good night, Mister Sherlock Holmes," he said. Holmes stared after him. "Now, who could that have been?" he wondered.
The next morning, Holmes, the King and I went to Briony Lodge. An old servant opened the door. "Mr. Sherlock Holmes?" she said. "My mistress told me you would come. She left this morning with her husband. She will not return to England." Holmes ran to the hidden panel. Inside, there was a photograph of Irene alone in an evening dress, and a letter addressed to him.
In the letter, Irene explained everything. After the cry of fire, she realized that she had shown her secret. She had already been warned that the King might go to Sherlock Holmes. So she dressed as a young man, followed the clergyman home, and saw where he went. It was she who had said good night to him. "I love and am loved by a better man than the King," she wrote. "I will keep the photograph only to protect myself. He need not fear me."
"What a woman!" cried the King. "Is it not a pity that she was not of my rank? Now the photograph is as safe as if it were in the fire." He offered Holmes a valuable emerald ring. But Holmes asked for only one thing: the photograph of Irene.
And that was how the best plans of Sherlock Holmes were beaten by a woman's cleverness. He used to laugh at the cleverness of women, but I have not heard him do so since. And when he speaks of Irene Adler, he always calls her "the woman."
