It was a hot afternoon in late summer. A great stag had been walking through the dry hills all day, and he was very thirsty. At last he came to a clear, quiet pool in the middle of a grassy plain, and he bent down his head to drink.
But before he drank, he saw something in the water. It was his own reflection, and the stag stopped and looked at it with pleasure.
"Look at those antlers," he said to himself. "How wide they are, and how tall and strong and beautiful! They are like the branches of a great tree, or a king's crown. No stag in the hills has antlers like mine." He turned his head to the left and then to the right, so that he could admire them from every side.
Then his eyes moved down to his legs, and his smile disappeared.
"But my legs," he sighed. "How thin and weak and ugly they are! They look like little sticks. It is a shame that such a fine head has to stand on such poor legs. If only my legs were as beautiful as my antlers, I would be the most handsome animal in the world."
He was so busy looking at himself that he did not hear the soft sound in the grass behind him. A lion had been watching him for some time. Now it was creeping closer and closer, keeping its body low to the ground.
Suddenly a bird flew up with a cry of warning. The stag looked up and saw the lion, and at that same moment, the lion jumped.
The stag turned and ran. His thin legs carried him across the open plain like the wind, much faster than the lion could run. With every step, the stag pulled further ahead. Soon the lion was far behind him, and the stag's heart filled with hope. "I am going to escape!" he thought.
But at the edge of the plain, there was a forest, and the stag ran straight into it without stopping. The trees here grew close together, and their branches were low and thick. Suddenly the stag's great antlers became caught in the branches.
He pulled his head to the left, and he pulled it to the right. He pulled with all his strength, but the branches only held him more tightly. He could not move.
Behind him, he heard the lion coming through the trees.
"Oh, how foolish I have been!" the stag cried. "I have hated my legs, but they nearly saved my life. I have loved my antlers, but they have trapped me here. The thing that I was proud of has caught me, and the thing that I was ashamed of was my best friend."
Those were the stag's last words before the shadow of the lion fell over him. He had learned the most important lesson of his life, but he had learned it too late.
