High on a rocky cliff, a great eagle had built her nest. She was the queen of the sky, and she believed that every creature below her was small and unimportant. When she flew over the fields, the rabbits ran and the mice hid. "Nobody can touch me," she said proudly, "because I am the strongest bird in the world."
Far below the cliff, a little black beetle lived in a hole at the foot of a tree. She had made a cozy home there for her young ones, and she worked hard every day to feed them.
One morning, the eagle was looking for food. She saw the beetle's little home, and with one strike of her great claws she tore it open. Then she ate the young beetles, one after another, and flew back up to her cliff without a second thought.
When the beetle came home, she found only an empty hole. She cried all day and all night. Then she dried her tears. "The eagle thinks that I am too small to matter," she said. "But she will learn that even a small creature can fight back."
The beetle began to climb. It took her many days to reach the top of the cliff, but she never stopped. At last she arrived at the eagle's nest while the eagle was out hunting. In the nest there were three large white eggs.
The beetle put her back against the first egg and pushed with all her strength. Slowly, slowly, it rolled to the edge of the nest and fell over. She did the same with the second egg, and then the third.
When the eagle came home and saw her empty nest, she screamed with anger. The next year, she built her nest on a higher cliff. But the beetle climbed that cliff too, and the eggs fell again. The year after that, the eagle built her nest on the highest mountain in the land. The beetle followed her there, step by step, and once again, the eggs fell.
The eagle did not know what to do. At last she flew up to the clouds, to the palace of Jupiter, the king of the gods, who had always loved eagles more than any other bird. "Great Jupiter," she cried, "some enemy is destroying my eggs every year. Is there any place in the world where my eggs will be safe?"
Jupiter felt sorry for her. "Bring your eggs to me," he said. "You may lay them in my lap. Nobody would dare to touch them there." So the eagle laid her eggs on Jupiter's lap, and she flew away feeling happy and safe.
But the beetle had heard everything. She opened her small wings and flew all the way up to the palace of the gods. It was a long, hard flight for such a small creature, but she did it. She flew into the great hall and began to buzz around Jupiter's head, around and around, past his ears and his nose and his eyes.
Jupiter jumped to his feet and waved his hands to drive the beetle away. In that moment, he forgot about the eggs completely. Down they fell to the marble floor, and every one of them broke.
When the eagle heard what had happened, she came to Jupiter in tears. But the beetle was there too, and she told Jupiter her own story from the beginning. Jupiter listened to them both, and then he turned to the eagle.
"You were the one who started this," he said. "You thought that the beetle was too small to matter. Now you know that you were wrong." And from that day on, the eagle never looked down on a small creature in the same way again.
