Niijima Jo was born in 1843 in Edo, the son of a samurai who served the small Annaka domain. As a boy, his name was Shimeta. He was clever and studied Chinese classics and, later, Dutch, which was the main Western language Japanese scholars could learn at that time.
It is said that one day, he saw a huge Dutch warship in Edo Bay. Next to it, the Japanese boats looked like toys. He wondered how foreign countries could build such ships. Later, he read a book in Chinese about the history of America. He was amazed to learn that in America, people chose their own leaders and built free schools for children.
He also read parts of the Bible in Chinese. He began to feel that he must go abroad to learn about the world and about this new faith. But Japan was still closed. Leaving the country without permission was a crime, and the punishment could be death.
In 1864, when he was twenty-one, Niijima went to Hakodate in the north. One night, with the help of friends, he secretly got on an American ship called the Berlin. In Shanghai, he moved to another American ship, the Wild Rover, and worked as a cabin boy. The captain, Horace Taylor, found his name hard to say, so he called him Joe.
After about a year at sea, the ship reached Boston. The owner of the ship, Alpheus Hardy, read a letter Niijima had written in simple English about why he had come. Hardy and his wife were moved. They took him into their home and paid for his education. Niijima later used the name Joseph Hardy Neesima.
He studied at Phillips Academy and then at Amherst College. In 1870, he graduated from Amherst. He is said to be the first Japanese person to earn a bachelor's degree. Then he studied at a seminary to become a Christian minister.
In 1872, the Iwakura Mission, a group of Japanese leaders traveling around the world, came to America. They asked Niijima to help them as an interpreter, and he traveled with them to Europe to study schools in many countries. By now, Japan had changed. He would no longer be punished for going home.
In 1874, before he returned to Japan, Niijima gave a speech at a church meeting in Rutland, Vermont. He spoke of his dream, a Christian school in Japan where young people could learn freely and grow into people of strong character. It is said that he told the audience he would not leave the stage until they helped him. People gave about five thousand dollars. One story says that a poor old farmer gave the two dollars he had saved for his train ticket home, and walked home instead.
In 1875, he opened the Doshisha English School in Kyoto with only eight students. Kyoto was a city of old temples, and many people did not want a Christian school there. But Niijima did not give up. The next year, he married Yamamoto Yae, a strong woman from Aizu who had fought in a war when she was young.
Niijima wanted Doshisha to become a full university. He traveled and gave speeches to raise money, even when he was sick. In 1890, he died in Oiso at the age of forty-six. His dream came true after his death. Doshisha University is now one of the best-known private universities in Japan.
Niijima risked his life for a chance to learn. He believed that education should make people free and kind, not just smart. Today, when studying abroad is much easier, his courage reminds us how precious the chance to learn really is.
