In a small town, there lived a cobbler who was very bad at his job. The shoes that he made were either too tight or too loose. The heels fell off after a week, and the rain came in through the holes. Soon nobody in the town would buy his shoes, and the cobbler became poorer and poorer.
"I cannot go on like this," he said one night, as he ate a piece of dry bread. "If I stay here, I will starve. I need a new job, one that pays more money and needs less skill." And then he had an idea, and he smiled for the first time in weeks.
The next morning, he packed his bag and walked to a big town far away, where nobody knew him. There he bought a long black coat, a pair of glasses and some little glass bottles. He filled the bottles with water, added a little sugar and some green coloring from the market, and shook them well. Then he stood in the town square and began to shout.
"Ladies and gentlemen! I am the famous Doctor Felix! I have traveled all over the world, and I have discovered the greatest medicine in history! It works against any poison, from snake bites to bad mushrooms! Only one silver coin a bottle!"
At first, people just looked at him. But the cobbler talked and talked, and he told wonderful stories about the kings he had saved and the princesses he had cured. He was a much better talker than he had ever been a shoemaker. Slowly, people began to buy his bottles, and then more people bought them.
Soon everyone in the town was talking about the great Doctor Felix. He was invited to the best houses, he wore fine clothes, and he was becoming rich.
Then, one winter, the cobbler became seriously ill and lay in bed with a terrible fever. The news reached the governor of the town, a wise old man who had never quite trusted this famous doctor. "Now we will see how good he really is," the governor said.
He went to the cobbler's house with two of his guards. He brought a cup of water and one of the doctor's own green bottles. "Doctor Felix," he said, "I have heard that you are sick, so I have brought you a test and a reward. In this cup, I am going to mix some deadly poison." He held his hand over the cup and pretended to drop something into it.
"Then I will add your famous medicine. If you drink it all, I will give you one hundred gold coins."
He poured some of the green medicine into the cup and held it out. The cobbler stared at it, and his face became as white as the sheets on his bed. His hands were shaking.
"No!" he cried. "Please, sir, do not make me drink it! I will tell you the truth. I am not a doctor, and I know nothing about medicine at all. I am only a poor cobbler, and the medicine is just sugar water. People believed me only because I talked so loudly, and because everyone else believed me too."
The governor put the cup down. There had never been any poison in it. Then he called all the people of the town to the square, and he told them everything.
"Citizens," he said, "how could you be so foolish? This man was not good enough to make shoes for your feet, and yet you trusted him with your lives."
The people looked at each other in shame. The next week, the cobbler left the town quietly, and he was never seen there again.
