In an old oak tree at the edge of a meadow, there lived a wise gray owl. Like most owls, she hunted at night and slept during the day. Every morning, just as the sun came up, she flew back to her hollow in the tree, closed her big yellow eyes and fell into a deep sleep.
But one summer, a grasshopper came to live in the grass under the oak, and the grasshopper loved to sing. She sang in the morning, she sang at noon, and she sang all afternoon until the sun went down. Her song was loud and sharp, and it never stopped. "Chirp, chirp, chirp, chirp!"
On the first day, the owl tried to ignore it. On the second day, she put her wings over her ears. On the third day, she could not bear it any longer, and she put her head out of her hollow.
"Excuse me," she said politely. "I am trying to sleep, because I have been hunting all night and I am very tired. Could you please sing a little more quietly, or perhaps sing somewhere else?"
The grasshopper looked up at her. "Why should I?" she said. "This meadow belongs to everyone, and I can sing wherever I like." And she sang even louder than before. "CHIRP, CHIRP, CHIRP!"
The next day, the owl asked again, a little less politely. The grasshopper only laughed and sang louder still. The more the owl asked, the louder the grasshopper sang. She enjoyed annoying the owl very much. "What can a sleepy old bird do to me?" she thought.
The owl did not sleep for a week. Her eyes became red, and her feathers became untidy. At last she realized that asking nicely was not going to work. "If I cannot change her mind with kind words," the owl thought, "perhaps I can change it with sweet ones."
So the next morning, she put her head out of the hollow again and spoke in her warmest voice. "My dear grasshopper," she said, "I have been unfair to you. I have been lying awake in my bed, listening to your song, and I have realized how beautiful it is. It is as sweet as the music of the gods."
"Since I cannot sleep anyway, I would like to celebrate. I have a bottle of very special nectar here, which was given to me by the goddess Minerva herself. Would you like to come up and share it with me?"
The grasshopper stopped singing. She was very thirsty after all that singing in the hot sun, and she was very pleased with herself. "At last," she thought, "here is someone who understands real talent!" She jumped up onto the branch and hopped happily toward the owl's hollow.
The owl smiled and waited until the grasshopper was very close. Then, as quick as lightning, she caught the grasshopper in her beak.
That afternoon, for the first time in many days, the meadow was quiet. The wind moved gently through the long grass, and the owl slept soundly in her hollow until the moon came up.
