Two huge men face each other in a small ring of hard clay. They crouch low, put their fists on the ground, and stare at each other. Suddenly they crash together. A few seconds later, one of them is pushed out of the ring. The crowd cheers. This is sumo, often called Japan's national sport, and one of the oldest sports in the world.
Sumo has a history of more than a thousand years. Long ago, it was part of Shinto ceremonies to pray for a good rice harvest. Later, it was performed at the emperor's court and for samurai. In the Edo period, it became a professional sport that ordinary people paid to watch. Even today, sumo keeps many Shinto traditions.
The rules are simple. The ring, called a dohyo, is about 4.5 meters across. A wrestler loses if he steps out of the ring, or if any part of his body except the bottoms of his feet touches the ground. There are no weight classes, so a small wrestler sometimes beats a much bigger one by using speed and skill. That is one of the most exciting things to watch.
Before each match, there are many rituals. The wrestlers throw handfuls of salt into the ring to make it pure. They raise their legs high and stamp them down hard. This movement, called shiko, is said to drive bad spirits out of the ground. They also crouch and stare at each other several times before the match begins. These rituals often take longer than the match itself!
The referee, called a gyoji, wears colorful clothes based on those of samurai long ago and holds a wooden fan. At the end of a match, he points his fan toward the winner.
Professional sumo wrestlers are called rikishi. They live and train together in groups called "stables," or heya. Young wrestlers get up early, train hard before breakfast, clean, and cook for the older wrestlers. Their famous dish is chanko-nabe, a big hot pot with meat, fish, and vegetables. Rikishi wear their hair in a traditional topknot, called a chonmage, like samurai once did.
There are six big tournaments every year. Three are held in Tokyo, and the others are in Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Each tournament lasts fifteen days, and each top wrestler has one match a day. The highest rank is yokozuna. Only a very small number of wrestlers in history have reached it. A yokozuna must be very strong, but he must also have good character and dignity.
Today, sumo wrestlers come not only from Japan, but also from countries such as Mongolia, Ukraine, and Georgia. Several wrestlers from abroad have become yokozuna.
If you want to watch sumo, you can buy tickets for a tournament. The cheapest seats are high in the back, but the atmosphere is still great. The matches of the top wrestlers start in the late afternoon. Some stables also let visitors watch morning practice, but you must be quiet and follow their rules.
How to explain it in English: "Sumo is Japan's traditional wrestling. You lose if you step out of the ring or touch the ground with anything but your feet. Before a match, wrestlers throw salt into the ring to make it pure."
