Many years ago, the city of Athens was ruled by King Aegeus. Athens was a proud city, but it carried a terrible sadness. Long before, it had lost a war to King Minos of Crete, a powerful island kingdom to the south. As a punishment, Minos demanded a tribute. Every nine years, Athens had to send seven young men and seven young women to Crete. None of them ever came back.
They were sent to the Minotaur. This creature lived in the center of the Labyrinth, a great maze built by the inventor Daedalus. The Minotaur had the body of a huge man and the head of a bull, with sharp horns and burning red eyes. The Labyrinth was so confusing that anyone who went inside was lost forever, and sooner or later the Minotaur found them.
King Aegeus had a son named Theseus, who had grown up far away and had only recently come to Athens. He was strong, clever, and fearless. When the time came to choose the next fourteen young people, Theseus saw the mothers and fathers crying in the streets. He went to his father.
"Let me go as one of the fourteen," he said. "I will kill the Minotaur and end this tribute forever."
The old king held his son's hands. "I have only just found you," he said. "I cannot lose you." But Theseus would not change his mind.
At last, the king agreed. "The ship that takes you to Crete has black sails, because it is a ship of mourning," he said. "If you live, change them to white sails on the way home. Every day I will stand on the cliff and watch the sea. When I see white sails, I will know that you are alive."
"I promise, Father," said Theseus.
When the ship arrived in Crete, King Minos came down to look at the young people from Athens. Next to him stood his daughter, Princess Ariadne. As soon as she saw Theseus, standing tall and calm in front of her cruel father, she fell in love with him. She could not let him die.
That night, Ariadne went secretly to the place where the Athenians were kept. "I can help you," she whispered to Theseus. "But you must take me away from Crete with you and make me your wife."
"I will," said Theseus.
She gave him two things. The first was a short sword, which she had hidden under her cloak. The second was a ball of red thread. "Daedalus himself told me this secret," she said. "Tie one end of the thread to the door when you go in. Let it out as you walk. When your work is done, follow the thread back, and it will lead you out."
The next morning, the guards pushed the fourteen Athenians into the Labyrinth. Theseus quickly tied the thread to the door. "Stay here, close to the entrance," he told the others. "I will go on alone." Then he walked into the darkness.
The passages turned left and right, up and down, again and again. Some ended in stone walls. Some went around in circles. The air was cold and smelled of animals. Theseus walked for hours, letting out the red thread behind him. Then he heard it: a deep, angry roar that shook the walls.
The Minotaur came around the corner. It was even bigger than the stories said. It lowered its horns and ran at him. Theseus jumped aside, and the monster crashed into the wall. Again and again it attacked, and again and again Theseus moved away. At last, when the beast was tired, Theseus caught one of its horns, pulled its head down, and struck with Ariadne's sword. The great creature fell to the ground and did not get up.
Theseus stood in the silence, breathing hard. Then he picked up the red thread and followed it, turn after turn, all the way back to the door. The young Athenians cried with joy when they saw him. With Ariadne, they ran down to the harbor in the dark, made holes in the bottoms of the Cretan ships so nobody could follow, and sailed away.
On the way home, they stopped at the island of Naxos. What happened there is told in different ways. Some say that Theseus left Ariadne sleeping on the beach. Others say that the god Dionysus fell in love with her and took her to be his own wife. Either way, Theseus sailed on without her, sad and lost in his thoughts.
Perhaps that is why he forgot his promise. As the ship came near Athens, its sails were still black.
On the high cliff, old King Aegeus was watching the sea, as he had every day. When he saw the black sails, his heart broke. He believed his son was dead. In his great sorrow, he threw himself from the cliff into the sea below.
When Theseus landed, the people of Athens met him with both joy and tears. The Minotaur was dead and the tribute was over, but the king was gone. Theseus became the new king of Athens, and he ruled wisely for many years. But he never forgot the price of the one promise he did not keep. And the sea where his father died is still called the Aegean Sea.
