An old woman lived alone in a large house full of beautiful things. She had silver cups, fine plates, colorful carpets and an old wooden clock that had belonged to her grandmother. She loved all of them. But as she grew older, her eyes became weaker and weaker, until one day she could not see anything at all.
She decided to call a doctor. "If you can make me see again," she told him, "I will pay you a large amount of money. But if my eyes are not cured, I will pay you nothing." To make the agreement official, she asked two neighbors to listen to it. The doctor agreed at once.
The doctor came to her house every day. He put a special cream on her eyes and told her to keep them closed. "This medicine takes time," he said. "Be patient."
But the doctor was not an honest man. Every time he visited, he looked around the house, and when he left, he took something with him. On the first day, he took a silver cup. On the second day, he took a pair of candlesticks. Then he took the carpets, the plates, the paintings and even the old wooden clock. Since the old woman could not see, she did not notice anything.
Weeks passed, and the house became emptier and emptier. At last, when the doctor had taken everything of value, he decided to cure her eyes properly. In a few days her sight came back.
"You can see again," he said with a smile. "Now, please pay me the money that you promised."
The old woman opened her eyes and looked around her house. The shelves were empty. The walls were bare. The floor had no carpets. Even her grandmother's clock was gone. She understood at once what had happened.
"I will not pay you anything," she said firmly.
The doctor was angry. He asked again and again, but she always gave the same answer. So in the end, he took her to court.
On the day of the trial, the judge listened to the doctor first. "This woman promised to pay me if I cured her eyes," he said. "I did cure them, and now she refuses to pay. Her neighbors heard the promise. Ask them."
Then the judge turned to the old woman. "Is this true?" he asked.
The old woman stood up slowly. "What this man says is partly true," she said. "I did promise to pay him if he gave me back my sight. If I stayed blind, I would pay him nothing. Now he says that I have been cured. But I say that I am still blind."
The courtroom became noisy. The judge raised his hand for silence. "Please explain," he said.
"Before I lost my sight," said the old woman, "I could see many beautiful things in my house. I could see silver cups, fine carpets and my grandmother's clock. Now this man says that my eyes are cured. But when I look around my house, I cannot see a single one of those things. So how can I be cured?"
Everyone in the courtroom turned to look at the doctor. His face went red, then white. The judge understood everything. He told the doctor that he would receive no money, and he ordered him to return every single thing that he had stolen.
That evening, the old woman sat in her house again, surrounded by her treasures. She listened to the tick of her grandmother's clock and smiled. Her eyes were cured, and so was her house.
