Long ago, there was a young prince who loved parties more than anything. His palace was full of music, and every week he invited the most important people in the country to watch dancers, singers and actors. But after a while, he became bored. "I have seen all of this before," he said with a yawn. "I want something new, something that nobody has ever seen."
Then one of his servants had an idea. "Your Highness," he said, "monkeys are very good at copying people. What if we taught some monkeys to dance?"
The prince loved the idea. He bought ten monkeys from a traveling merchant and hired the best dance teacher in the country. Every day, for months, the monkeys practiced. They watched the teacher carefully and copied every step. They learned to bow, to turn and to move together in perfect lines.
Then the prince had beautiful costumes made for them. There were tiny silk jackets, long colorful skirts, and golden masks that covered their faces. When the monkeys were dressed, they did not look like monkeys at all. They looked like a group of small, elegant ladies and gentlemen.
The first show was a great success. The monkeys danced across the stage while the orchestra played, and the guests could not believe their eyes. "Wonderful!" they cried. "Marvelous!" After that, the monkeys danced at every party, and people traveled from far away to see them. Everyone agreed that it was the most amazing show in the world.
But not everyone was happy. One of the guests was a jealous man who did not like the prince. "This is all nonsense," he thought. "A monkey in a silk jacket is still a monkey, and I will show everyone the truth."
At the next party, he came with his pockets full of nuts. He sat in the front row and waited. The music started, and the monkeys came onto the stage and began their most beautiful dance. The audience was silent with admiration.
Then the man stood up, took a big handful of nuts from his pocket, and threw them onto the stage.
For one second, nothing happened. Then the monkeys saw the nuts.
In an instant, the dance was forgotten. The monkeys threw themselves onto the floor and tore off their golden masks so that they could see better. They pulled off their silk jackets and ripped their skirts. They screamed and chattered and fought each other for every single nut. One monkey jumped onto the head of the orchestra leader, and another was swinging from the curtains with a nut in each hand.
The guests stared, and then they began to laugh. They laughed until tears ran down their faces. The beautiful show had turned into a crazy fight in a few seconds. The prince's face turned bright red, and he hid behind his hands.
When everything was quiet again, the stage was covered with torn silk and broken masks. In the middle of it all, ten very happy monkeys were sitting and eating nuts.
The prince never held a monkey show again. He had learned that clothes and lessons can change how something looks, but they cannot change what it really is.
