Early in the spring, a mother lark built her nest on the ground in a field of young green wheat. Soon she laid her eggs, and a few weeks later, four little larks came out of them. All through the spring and summer, the mother worked hard. She flew over the fields from morning to night and brought back insects and seeds for her hungry babies.
The wheat grew tall and golden around them, and the young larks grew strong. Their feathers became thick and brown, and they began to practice using their wings. But they were not quite ready to leave the nest.
One morning, when their mother was away, the farmer who owned the field came to look at his wheat. He walked along the edge of the field with his son, and he stopped quite close to the nest.
"The wheat is ripe," he said. "The time has come to cut it. I will ask all my neighbors to come and help me with the harvest."
The young larks heard every word, and they were terribly frightened. When their mother came home, they all began to chirp at once. "Mother! Mother! The farmer says that he is going to cut the wheat! His neighbors are coming to help him! We must fly away to a safe place at once!"
The mother lark listened calmly. Then she shook her head. "There is no need to move yet, my dears," she said. "A man who leaves his work to his neighbors is not really serious about it. Wait and see."
A few days later, the farmer came again. He looked at the wheat, which was now so ripe that the grain was falling to the ground. He looked very annoyed.
"My neighbors have not come," he said to his son. "They are all too busy with their own fields. I will ask my relatives instead. My brothers and my cousins will surely help me."
Again the young larks told their mother what they had heard. They were even more frightened than before. But again the mother lark only smiled. "Do not worry," she said. "His relatives have their own work to do. They will not come either. We can stay a little longer."
And she was right. The relatives did not come. The young larks used those extra days to practice flying. Every day they flew a little higher and a little farther than the day before.
Then, one evening, the farmer came to the field for the third time. His face was serious, and he spoke in a firm voice.
"I have waited long enough for other people," he said to his son. "Tomorrow morning, you and I will come here ourselves. We will bring our own tools, and we will cut this wheat with our own hands."
When the mother lark heard about this, she stood up at once. "Now it is time to go, my little ones," she said. "This time the man is serious. He is no longer waiting for others. He is going to do the work himself, and when a man does that, the work really gets done."
That night, the lark family flew away to a quiet meadow beyond the hill. The next morning, as the sun came up, they looked back and saw the farmer and his son cutting the golden wheat, just as he had said.
