It is ten o'clock at night. Kenta still has to write a report about recycling for his social studies class. He opens a generative AI chatbot on his phone and types, "Write six hundred words about recycling in Japan." In less than ten seconds, a neat report appears on the screen. It looks better than anything he could write himself. Should he copy it and go to bed?
Situations like this have become common since late 2022. That was when powerful AI chatbots became free for anyone to use. These tools can answer questions, write essays, solve math problems, and translate sentences. Many students have tried them. Schools around the world have had to decide what to do about them.
At first, some schools simply banned them. In January 2023, the public schools of New York City blocked a popular chatbot on school computers and networks. They were worried that students would use it to cheat. However, only about four months later, the city changed its mind and lifted the ban. Its school leaders explained that they had acted too quickly out of fear. They said that AI could also help students and teachers.
In Japan, the Ministry of Education published guidelines on generative AI for schools in July 2023. It updated them in December 2024. The guidelines do not ban generative AI. Instead, they say that it can be useful when it is used for a clear purpose. However, students should not hand in work made by AI as their own. The guidelines also say that students need to learn about AI's weak points, such as wrong answers and the risks of typing in personal information.
Why are teachers worried? The main reason is that homework is not really about the finished product. When you write a report, you have to collect information, organize your ideas, and choose the right words. This hard work trains your brain. If AI does all of it, you get a good report, but you learn almost nothing. It is like asking a friend to go to the gym for you.
Another problem is that AI is not always right. Chatbots sometimes give wrong facts or even mention books that do not exist, but their answers sound very confident. Students who copy these answers may hand in reports full of mistakes. It is also hard for teachers to know who really wrote a report. Some programs say they can find writing made by AI, but they are not very reliable. In 2023, one AI company stopped offering its own checking tool, because it was not accurate enough.
On the other hand, many teachers believe that AI can be a helpful study partner if it is used well. For example, a student can ask AI to explain a difficult math idea in simpler words. Another student can ask it to make five practice questions before a test. In English classes, students can write a paragraph first and then ask AI to point out grammar mistakes. A shy student can practice conversation with a chatbot without feeling nervous.
Some schools have made their own rules to find a middle way. Students may use AI to get ideas, but they must write the report themselves. They must also say clearly when and how they used AI, just as they list the books they used. Some teachers have changed their homework, too. Instead of only asking for a report, they ask students to explain their ideas in class or to write in class by hand.
So what should Kenta do? He could ask the chatbot for a few ideas about recycling. Then he could check them in a book or on a website that he can trust. Finally, he could write the report in his own words. It will take longer, but the report will really be his, and he will remember what he has learned.
What do you think? Some people say students should be allowed to use AI for homework, because it is a useful tool that they will need in the future. Others say AI should not be used for homework, because students will stop thinking for themselves and may not learn anything.
