Today, you can buy a new T-shirt for less than the price of lunch. Clothing stores change their products every few weeks, following the newest trends. This business style is called fast fashion. It has made stylish clothes cheap and easy to buy for many people around the world.
How can clothes be so cheap? Fast fashion companies make huge amounts of clothes in countries where wages are low. They use cheap materials, such as polyester, which is a kind of plastic. They design, make, and send new products to stores very quickly, so customers keep coming back to see what is new.
For shoppers, fast fashion has clear merits. Young people with little money can enjoy fashion. Families can buy clothes for growing children without spending too much. Also, the clothing industry gives jobs to millions of people in countries such as Bangladesh and Vietnam.
However, fast fashion has a dark side. Making clothes uses a lot of water and energy. For example, growing the cotton for one pair of jeans can take thousands of liters of water. Dyeing cloth can pollute rivers. And when polyester clothes are washed, tiny pieces of plastic come off and flow into the sea.
Waste is another big problem. Because clothes are cheap, people buy many of them and throw them away after wearing them only a few times. Many clothes that are given away are sent to other countries, where they sometimes end up in huge piles on beaches or in deserts. In Japan, too, a large share of old clothes is burned or buried as trash.
The speed of fashion is also increasing. Some online companies now add thousands of new items to their websites every day, at even lower prices. Their products are popular with young shoppers around the world, but critics say that this "ultra fast fashion" makes the problems of waste and pollution even worse.
Workers' safety is also a concern. In 2013, a building with several clothing factories collapsed in Bangladesh, and more than one thousand workers died. This accident made many people ask who really pays the price for cheap clothes.
Some changes are happening. Some companies now collect old clothes in their stores and recycle them. In July 2026, the European Union began to stop large companies from destroying clothes and shoes that they could not sell. Secondhand clothing apps and shops are becoming popular, especially among young people. Repairing, swapping, and renting clothes are other ways to use them longer.
Some people point out that not everyone can afford expensive, eco-friendly clothes. They say the answer is not to stop buying cheap clothes, but to buy only what we need and to wear it for a long time. A cheap shirt that is worn a hundred times may be better than an expensive one that is worn only twice.
What do you think? Some people say that we should stop buying fast fashion, because it harms the environment and the people who make the clothes. Others say that fast fashion is fine, because it lets everyone enjoy fashion at a low price, and it creates jobs.
