It is nine o'clock on a weekday night in front of a train station. Groups of junior high school students are coming out of a building with heavy bags on their backs. They are not leaving school. They are leaving juku, or cram school, where they have studied for two or three more hours after a full day of classes.
Juku are a big part of student life in Japan. According to a survey by the Ministry of Education, about two out of three families with children at public junior high schools paid for juku in 2023. Cram schools are popular in other parts of Asia, too. In South Korea, private academies called hagwons are so common that some streets are lined with them.
Why do so many students go to juku? Many want to pass entrance exams for high school or university. Juku teachers know a lot about these exams, and they teach useful ways to answer questions quickly. Some students go because they cannot understand their school lessons. Others say they simply study harder when their friends are studying around them.
Juku come in many types. Some are large companies with hundreds of schools across the country, while others are small classrooms run by one teacher in a neighborhood. Some focus on entrance exams, and others help students keep up with their school lessons. There are also online juku, where students study with a teacher through a screen at home.
However, juku are not cheap. In the same survey, families of public junior high school students who used juku paid about 350,000 yen a year on average. The survey also showed a clear difference between families with different incomes. Families that earned less than four million yen a year spent about 150,000 yen a year on extra study for a public junior high school student, including juku, home tutors, and workbooks. Families that earned twelve million yen or more spent about 410,000 yen, almost three times as much.
This raises a difficult question. Is the race to get into good schools fair? Some people say it is not. Children from rich families can get extra lessons, practice tests, and advice about which schools to choose. Children from poor families may have the same talent, but they do not get the same chances. Some people worry that this gap may be passed down from parents to children, generation after generation.
Others see juku differently. They point out that juku can help students who are falling behind at school. A good juku teacher can give a student confidence and a reason to study. Juku also give jobs to many people, including university students who work there as part-time teachers. Many people also believe that if families want to spend their money on education, that is their own choice.
Many people are trying to make the race fairer. In many cities, there are free study rooms for children from families with little money. Volunteers, such as university students and retired teachers, help the children with their homework and listen to their worries. Some schools also give extra lessons after school or during summer vacation for free. In this way, children can get extra help without paying for it.
Technology may help, too. Today, there are many free or cheap online video lessons, and some of them are made by very good teachers. A student with a tablet and an internet connection can study almost anywhere. But a video cannot always answer questions, and it cannot notice when a student is losing motivation.
Some people believe that the best answer is to make school lessons so good that students do not need juku at all. For that, schools may need more teachers and smaller classes. However, this costs a lot of money, and teachers in Japan are already very busy.
What do you think? Some people say that juku are good, because they help students learn more and prepare well for entrance exams. Others say that juku make education unfair, because only families with enough money can pay for extra lessons.
