The nighthawk was a very ugly bird. His face was covered with spots, and his flat beak opened wide, almost to his ears. His legs were so weak that he could hardly walk.
The other birds did not like him at all. "Look, here comes the nighthawk," they said. "What an ugly face! He makes all birds look bad." Even the little skylark turned away when it saw him.
But the nighthawk was not a bad bird. In fact, his younger brothers were the beautiful kingfisher and the tiny hummingbird, the jewel of birds. And he was not a hawk at all. People called him a "nighthawk" only because his wings were strong and his cry was a little like a hawk's.
The hawk hated this. One evening he came to the nighthawk's house. "Hey! Change your name," the hawk said. "You are no hawk. From now on, your name is Ichizo. Hang a sign with your new name around your neck, and go to every bird's house and tell them. If you don't do it by the morning after tomorrow, I will kill you."
"I can't do that," said the nighthawk. "God gave me this name." But the hawk only said, "Remember. The morning after tomorrow," and flew away.
The nighthawk closed his eyes and thought. "Why does everyone hate me? I have never done anything wrong. Once, a baby bird fell out of its nest, and I carried it back home. But its mother took it away from me as if I were a thief. And now the hawk is going to kill me."
It was getting dark. The nighthawk flew out into the evening sky with his big mouth open, as always. Many small insects flew into his mouth. Then a beetle went in. It moved around inside his throat, and he swallowed it with difficulty. Suddenly, a cold feeling went through his heart.
He began to cry, flying round and round in the sky. "Every night I kill so many insects. And now I will be killed by the hawk. That is why it hurts so much. I won't eat anything any more. Before the hawk kills me, I will go far, far away, to the other side of the sky."
He went to his brother, the kingfisher. "I am going far away," he said. "Please don't catch fish unless you really have to." He asked the kingfisher to say goodbye to the hummingbird for him. Then he went home, cleaned his little house, and waited for the morning.
When the sun came up, the nighthawk flew straight toward it. "Sun, please take me with you. I don't mind if I burn. Even an ugly body like mine can give a little light." But the sun said, "You are a bird of the night. Ask the stars tonight."
That night, the nighthawk flew to the stars, one by one. "Orion, please take me with you!" But Orion did not even look at him. He asked the Great Dog. "Don't be silly," it said. "With your wings, it would take you millions and millions of years to get here." He asked the Great Bear. "Go and cool your head," it said. "Jump into a sea with icebergs in it, or into a glass of ice water." He asked the Eagle. "To become a star, you must be an important person. You also need a lot of money," it said.
The nighthawk lost all his strength and fell down toward the ground. But just before he hit it, he flew up again like a rocket. "Kishi, kishi, kishi!" he cried in a high, sharp voice. It sounded just like a hawk. All the birds woke up and looked up at the sky, shaking with fear.
He flew up and up, straight into the sky. The air became colder and thinner. His breath turned white, and frost covered his wings. But he kept going. At last he did not know if he was going up or down. His heart was calm. His big beak had a little blood on it and was turned to the side, but he was surely smiling a little.
After a while, the nighthawk opened his eyes. His own body was burning with a beautiful blue light. He was now next to the stars of Cassiopeia, and the Milky Way was right behind him.
The nighthawk star kept burning. It is still burning now, quietly, in the night sky.
