In October 1929, prices on the stock market in New York suddenly crashed. It was the start of the Great Depression, the worst economic crisis of the twentieth century. By 1933, about one out of every four American workers had no job. Farmers lost their land. Many families lost their homes and lived in small shacks made of boxes and metal.
Banks were also in trouble. People were afraid that their banks would close and their savings would disappear, so they rushed to take out their money. But this made even more banks close. By early 1933, many states had closed their banks completely.
On March 4, 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt became the new president. He was fifty-one years old. About twelve years before, he had become sick with polio, and he could no longer walk without help. He wore heavy metal braces on his legs. He knew from his own life what it meant to fight against fear and difficulty.
It was a cold, grey day in Washington. A large crowd stood in front of the Capitol building. Millions more listened on the radio at home. Everyone wanted to know one thing: could the new president save the country?
Roosevelt began by promising to tell the truth. This was a time, he said, to speak honestly and boldly. Then he spoke the line that made the speech famous: "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." He explained that fear without reason can freeze people and stop them from moving forward.
He also promised quick action. "This Nation asks for action, and action now," he said. He even said that, if necessary, he would ask Congress for powers as great as those he would have if the country were attacked by a foreign enemy.
And he did act. Two days later, he closed all the banks in the country for several days, so that experts could check which ones were safe. On March 12, he spoke to the nation on the radio in a calm, friendly voice. He explained in simple words how banks worked and why it was safer to keep money in the reopened banks than under the bed. This was the first of his famous "fireside chats." When the banks opened again, many people brought their money back.
In his first hundred days, Roosevelt and Congress passed many new laws to create jobs and to help farmers and families. Together, these programs were called the New Deal. Not all of them worked, and people still argue about them today. The Depression did not truly end until World War Two. But many Americans began to feel hope again.
Roosevelt was elected president four times, more than anyone else in American history. His first speech is still remembered because it faced fear directly, and then turned words into action.
