Imagine a high school student named Kenta. It is the last day of summer vacation, and he is sitting at his desk at midnight with a pile of worksheets. He has not finished his reading report, and his math workbook is still half empty. Many people in Japan have had a night like this. It makes us ask a simple question: do we really need homework?
People have argued about homework for a long time. Some parents and teachers think it is necessary for learning. Others think it takes away children's free time. Today, the question has become even more interesting, because students can use the internet and AI to help them with their homework.
What does research say? In 2006, a group of researchers in the United States looked at many studies about homework. They found that homework generally had a positive effect on students' achievement. However, the link was stronger for students in junior high and high school than for younger children. In other words, homework may help older students more than it helps small children. The researchers also pointed out that all of the studies had some weak points.
People who support homework give several reasons. First, practice helps us remember. A new English word or math rule is easy to forget if we use it only once in class. Second, homework helps students build good habits, such as planning their time and working alone. Third, it shows parents what their children are learning at school.
On the other hand, many people think there is too much homework. When students have club activities, juku, and hours of homework, they may not get enough sleep. Some students feel stressed and start to dislike studying. Children also need time to play, read for fun, help with housework, and talk with their families.
There is also a question of fairness. Some students have a quiet room, a computer, and parents who can help them. Others have to share a small room with brothers and sisters, or take care of family members after school. For these students, homework can be much harder, even if they are just as smart.
Another new problem is copying. Answers to many textbook questions can be found online, and AI tools can write a report in a few seconds. If students simply copy answers, homework becomes a waste of time for everyone, including the teachers who check it.
Homework is not only work for students. Teachers have to make it, collect it, and check it. A teacher with forty students may spend an hour or more every day just checking notebooks. Some teachers say they would rather use that time to prepare better lessons.
How much homework do students get in other countries? The answer is very different from country to country, and even from school to school. In some places, young children get almost no homework, and they are expected to play outside after school. In other places, students spend many hours on homework every night.
Because of these problems, some schools are trying new kinds of homework. In many Japanese elementary schools, students keep a self-study notebook and choose what to study each day. Some teachers give less homework but ask students to think more deeply, for example by interviewing a family member or writing their own opinion. Other teachers ask students to watch a short video lesson at home and then practice in class.
Maybe the real question is not whether homework is good or bad. It is what kind of homework, and how much. Ten minutes of the right practice may be more useful than two hours of copying. In our example, Kenta finally finishes his worksheets at three in the morning. But the next day, he cannot remember much of what he wrote.
What do you think? Some people say students should have homework every day, because it helps them review their lessons and build good study habits. Others say students should not have much homework, because they need time to rest, enjoy their hobbies, and spend time with their families.
