On June 5, 2008, thousands of graduates of Harvard University, one of the most famous universities in the world, gathered for their graduation ceremony. The speaker that day was J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books. By then, her books had sold hundreds of millions of copies around the world.
Many people expected a speech about success. Instead, Rowling chose two surprising topics: the good side of failure, and the importance of imagination. She called the first one "the fringe benefits of failure," meaning the unexpected extra gifts that failure can bring.
She began by talking about her own life. As a young woman, she loved writing stories more than anything. But her parents had grown up poor, and they worried that writing would never pay the bills. They hoped she would study something practical. She went to university to study languages, partly to please them.
About seven years after she finished university, her life seemed to have fallen apart. Her short marriage had ended. She was a single mother with a baby, and she had no job. She was very poor. By ordinary standards, she said, she was the biggest failure she knew.
But failure, she explained, took away everything that was not important. She stopped pretending to be someone she was not. She put all her energy into the one thing that really mattered to her, which was writing. Hitting the lowest point of her life gave her a solid place on which to build again.
She also said that failure taught her things about herself that she could not have learned any other way. She found out that she had a strong will. She also learned who her true friends were.
Her second topic was imagination. She did not only mean the power to invent stories about wizards and magic. She meant the power to understand people whose lives are very different from our own.
In her early twenties, she had worked at the London office of Amnesty International, an organization that helps people who are put in prison or hurt because of their beliefs. She read letters written by people in countries ruled by cruel governments. She saw photos of people who had disappeared. She learned about people who had lost everything because they had spoken out.
That job taught her that imagination can lead to empathy, the ability to feel what others feel. People who choose not to imagine the pain of others, she warned, can allow terrible things to happen. She told the graduates that people with power and education, like them, have a special responsibility to use their imagination for others.
At the end, she shared a thought from an ancient Roman writer: a life is like a story, and what matters is not how long it is, but how good it is.
Many listeners found her honesty encouraging. Few people expect a world-famous writer to talk so openly about being a failure. Her speech reminds us that failure is not the end of the story. Sometimes, it is where the best part begins.
