In a forest, three thieves were fighting over three treasures: boots that could fly a thousand ri in one jump, a cloak that made you invisible, and a sword that could cut iron in two. But all of them looked like old junk.
"Give me that cloak!" "Hey, you stole my boots!" Just then, a prince came by on a horse. "Why fight over an old cloak and boots with holes?" he asked. The thieves told him what the treasures could do.
"Then why not take one each?" said the prince. "Then he could cut off my head with that sword!" "And with that cloak, he could steal anything from us!" "Then sell them all to me," said the prince. He gave his red cloak, his shoes with jewels, and his gold sword for the three old things. When he left, the thieves laughed. "What a fool!"
That evening, the prince was eating bread at an inn called the Golden Horn. Some farmers were talking. "The princess must marry the King of Africa, but she hates him." "The King of Africa has three treasures: boots that fly, a sword that cuts iron, and a cloak that makes you invisible. He will give them to our greedy king, so the king said yes." "Poor princess! But nobody can win against him."
Suddenly the prince jumped up. "Don't worry! I will save her! I have the same three treasures!" "But your boots have holes," said the innkeeper. "They can still fly a thousand ri. What shall I bring you back? Pomegranates from Italy?" "Anything is fine. Just fly."
"One, two, three!" The prince jumped, but before he even reached the door, he fell down on his bottom. Everyone laughed loudly. "He didn't even fly a few steps!" "No, he flew a thousand ri and then flew a thousand ri back!"
"You are young," said the innkeeper kindly. "Go home. People should remember their limits." The prince began to cry. "I'm so ashamed that I want to disappear." "Then put on your cloak," said a farmer. "Laugh all you want!" cried the prince. "I will save the princess, even with my empty hands!" And he ran out of the inn.
In the castle garden, a fountain sprayed water among the roses. The prince came in, wearing the old cloak. "This cloak really works," he said to himself. "Nobody stopped me." Then the princess came to the fountain and sighed. "In less than a week, that hateful King of Africa will take me away to a land of lions and crocodiles. I want to stay here forever among the roses."
"What a beautiful princess," said the prince. "I will save her, even if I lose my life." The princess turned. "Who are you?" "You can see me?" "Of course. What an old cloak!" "But this cloak makes me invisible!" The princess laughed. "Nobody stopped you because in that old cloak, they thought you were a servant!" "But I came to save you," said the prince. "Really? Oh, I'm so happy!"
Suddenly the King of Africa appeared. "I just flew here from Africa in one jump." "Then please fly back," said the princess coldly. "Who is that servant?" asked the king. "I am a prince! I came to save the princess! My boots cannot fly far, but with the princess, I'm not afraid of one or two thousand ri. And this cloak helped me reach her. It hid the prince in me, didn't it?"
"How rude! See the power of my cloak!" said the king. He put it on and disappeared. "He's gone! I'm so glad!" cried the princess. "That cloak seems to be made for us," said the prince. The king appeared again and angrily threw the cloak away. Then he drew his sword. "You are taking my happiness. Let's fight."
The princess stood in front of the prince. "If your sword can cut iron, it can pierce my chest too. Try it!" The king stepped back. "No, I can't hurt you." But the prince gently held her back. "The king is right. I am his enemy. We must fight." Their swords met, and the king's sword cut through the prince's sword as if it were a stick.
"Well?" said the king. "My sword is cut, but I am still smiling," said the prince. But the king threw his sword away. "You won. If I killed you, the princess would only hate me more. I thought I could win her with three treasures, but I was wrong." The prince put a hand on his shoulder. "I thought I could save her with three treasures. I was wrong too."
They shook hands. "You beat me," said the king, "and I beat myself. Your sword pierced my heart, which is harder than iron. I will go back to Africa. Please take my three treasures as a wedding present. If you ever have an enemy, I will come with a million soldiers." Then he said sadly, "I built a marble palace for you, with lotus flowers all around. Please visit me sometimes with these boots."
The princess put a rose on his chest. "I'm sorry. I never dreamed that you were so kind." And she cried like a child. The king stroked her hair. "Thank you. I am not a devil. A king of Africa who is like a devil lives only in fairy tales."
Then the prince turned to the people watching the play. "Everyone! We three have woken up. A devilish king and a prince with three treasures live only in fairy tales. Now that we are awake, we cannot live there. A wider world is appearing out of the fog. Let us go out together from this world of roses and fountains into that world. A wider world! An uglier, more beautiful, bigger fairy-tale world! We do not know if pain or joy is waiting for us there. We only know that we will march into it, like a brave group of soldiers."
