Have you ever had a shot at a clinic and felt a little pain in your arm? That small shot may be one of the greatest inventions in human history. Vaccines protect people from serious diseases, and they have saved millions of lives. But how do they work, and why do some people still worry about them?
For thousands of years, one of the most feared diseases in the world was smallpox. People who caught it got a high fever and painful spots all over their bodies. Many of them died, and many of those who survived were left with deep marks on their skin. Smallpox spread easily from person to person, and it attacked both rich and poor people.
At the end of the 18th century, an English doctor named Edward Jenner became interested in a story that he had heard from farmers. Women who milked cows sometimes caught a mild disease called cowpox from the animals. People said that these women did not seem to catch smallpox. Jenner wondered if cowpox could protect people from the more dangerous disease.
In 1796, he tested his idea. He took some material from a cowpox sore on the hand of a young woman named Sarah Nelmes. Then he put it into small cuts on the arm of James Phipps, the eight-year-old son of his gardener. The boy became a little sick, but he soon got better. A few weeks later, Jenner exposed the boy to smallpox, but James did not get the disease.
Jenner's method soon spread to other countries. The word "vaccine" comes from vacca, the Latin word for "cow." Today, an experiment like this on a child would never be allowed, but Jenner's work opened the door to a new kind of medicine.
To understand vaccines, we need to know about the immune system. This is the body's defense team. When a virus or harmful bacteria enter the body, the immune system learns to recognize them and makes special proteins called antibodies to fight them. After the battle, the body remembers the enemy. If the same germ comes back, the body can fight it much faster.
A vaccine uses this memory. It shows the immune system a weak or harmless form of a germ, or only a small part of it. The body learns what the enemy looks like without becoming seriously ill. Later, if the real germ attacks, the body is already prepared.
Vaccines also protect people who have not been vaccinated. Some people, such as newborn babies or people with certain illnesses, cannot receive some vaccines. When most people in a community are vaccinated, a disease has a hard time spreading, so these people are protected too. This is called herd immunity.
Thanks to vaccines, smallpox became the first human disease to be completely wiped out. After many years of work by countries around the world, the World Health Organization, or WHO, declared in 1980 that smallpox had been eradicated. So far, it is still the only human disease that has disappeared from the world in this way.
Other vaccines have also made a huge difference. In 2024, the WHO said that vaccines had saved at least 154 million lives over the past 50 years. Most of the people saved were babies, and the measles vaccine alone saved more lives than any other vaccine.
However, not everyone feels comfortable about vaccines. Like all medicines, vaccines can have side effects. Most of them are mild, such as a sore arm or a slight fever for a day or two, but serious side effects can happen in rare cases. Some people also do not trust information from governments or drug companies, and false stories about vaccines often spread on the internet.
Countries deal with this problem in different ways. In some countries, children must receive certain vaccines before they can start school. In Japan, the government strongly recommends many vaccines for children, but people are not forced to take them.
What do you think? Some people say vaccines should be required for all children, because they protect not only each child but also the whole community. Others say families should be free to choose, because people have the right to make decisions about their own bodies.
