There was once a poor widow who had an only son named Jack and a cow named Milky-white. All they had to live on was the milk the cow gave every morning, which they took to the market and sold. But one morning Milky-white gave no milk.
"What shall we do?" said the widow. "We must sell Milky-white." "Cheer up, Mother," said Jack. "It's market day today. I'll sell her, and then we'll see what we can do."
So he took the cow and started off. He had not gone far when he met a funny-looking old man. "Good morning, Jack," said the man. "Where are you going?"
"I'm going to market to sell our cow." "Well, you look like a clever boy," said the man. "Do you know how many beans make five?" "Two in each hand and one in your mouth," said Jack quickly.
"Right you are," said the man. He pulled five strange-looking beans out of his pocket. "Since you're so clever, I'll trade with you. Your cow for these beans. If you plant them tonight, by morning they'll grow right up to the sky."
"Really?" said Jack. So he gave the man Milky-white and went home with the beans.
"Back already, Jack?" said his mother. "How much did you get for her?" "You'll never guess, Mother. Look, five magic beans!" "What!" cried his mother.
"You silly boy! You gave away our Milky-white for a handful of beans? Off to bed with you, and no supper!" She threw the beans out of the window. Jack went up to his little room, very sad and very hungry.
When he woke up, the room looked strange. Part of it was dark. He jumped up and went to the window. The beans had grown into a huge beanstalk. It went up and up and up until it reached the sky.
Jack climbed and climbed until at last he reached the sky. There he found a long, wide road and followed it until he came to a great big tall house. On the doorstep stood a great big tall woman.
"Good morning," said Jack politely. "Could you please give me some breakfast? I had nothing to eat last night."
"Breakfast?" said the woman. "You'll BE breakfast if you don't go away. My husband is an ogre, and he loves to eat boys." But Jack begged so nicely that she took him into the kitchen and gave him bread and cheese and milk.
Jack had not finished when thump, thump, thump! The whole house began to shake. "It's my husband!" said the woman. "Quick, hide in here!" And she pushed him into the oven.
In came the ogre. He sniffed the air and roared, "Fee-fi-fo-fum! I smell a boy! Where is he?"
"Nonsense, dear," said his wife. "You only smell yesterday's dinner. Go and wash, and your breakfast will be ready."
After a huge breakfast, the ogre took two bags of gold from a chest and sat down to count his coins. Soon his head began to nod, and he started to snore so loudly that the whole house shook again. Jack crept out of the oven, picked up one of the bags of gold and ran to the beanstalk. He threw the bag down into his mother's garden and climbed down after it. "Well, Mother, wasn't I right about the beans?"
They lived on the gold for some time, but at last it was all used up. So Jack climbed the beanstalk again. This time he hid in a big copper pot and watched the ogre take out a hen. "Lay!" said the ogre, and the hen laid an egg of pure gold. When the ogre fell asleep, Jack took the hen and ran home.
But Jack wanted to try his luck once more. He climbed up again and hid. After dinner the ogre brought out a golden harp. "Sing!" he said, and the harp sang so beautifully that he soon fell asleep.
Jack crept out and grabbed the harp. But as he ran, the harp called out loudly, "Master! Master!" The ogre woke up and came after him.
Jack climbed down the beanstalk as fast as he could, and the ogre began to climb down after him. The whole beanstalk shook. "Mother! Bring me an axe!" cried Jack.
His mother came running with the axe. Jack jumped down, took the axe and chopped at the beanstalk. Chop, chop, chop! The beanstalk fell, and down came the ogre with a terrible crash. He never troubled anyone again.
Jack showed his mother the golden harp. With the harp's music and the hen's golden eggs, they never had to worry about money again. Later Jack married a great princess, and they all lived happily ever after.
