A little brother took his little sister by the hand and said, "Since our mother died, we haven't had one happy hour. Our stepmother is cruel to us every day. We get only hard old bread to eat, and the little dog under the table has a better life than we do. Come, let's go out into the wide world together."
They walked all day over fields and stones, and when it rained, the sister said, "Even the sky is crying with us." In the evening they came to a large forest. They were so tired and hungry that they lay down in a hollow tree and fell asleep.
In the morning the brother said, "Sister, I'm so thirsty. I think I can hear a stream." But their stepmother was a witch. She had followed the children secretly and put a spell on all the streams in the forest.
At the first stream, the sister heard it whisper: "Whoever drinks from me will become a tiger." "Please don't drink, brother," she cried. "If you become a wild animal, you will eat me up." So the brother did not drink, though he was very thirsty.
At the second stream, the sister heard, "Whoever drinks from me will become a wolf." Again she begged him not to drink, and again he didn't. "But at the next stream I must drink," he said, "whatever you say."
At the third stream, the sister heard, "Whoever drinks from me will become a deer." "Oh, brother, please don't drink, or you'll become a deer and run away from me." But her brother had already bent down and drunk from the water. As soon as the first drops touched his lips, he became a young deer.
The sister cried over her poor brother, and the little deer cried too. At last she said, "Don't cry, little deer. I'll never leave you." She took off her golden garter and put it around his neck. Then she made a soft rope of grass and led him deeper into the forest.
At last they came to a little empty house, and they began to live there. She made a soft bed of leaves and moss for the deer. Every day she brought him soft grass. In the evening she laid her head on his back and slept.
Then one day the king of that country held a great hunt in the forest. The horns sounded, the dogs barked, and the hunters shouted happily. The little deer wanted very much to join in, and at last his sister let him go. "But come back in the evening," she said. "When you knock, say, 'Little sister, let me in.' If you don't say that, I won't open the door."
The king's hunters chased the beautiful deer with the golden band, but he was too fast for them. In the evening he ran home, knocked, and said, "Little sister, let me in."
The next day the deer ran out again. This time one of the hunters hurt his foot a little, so he could only run slowly. A hunter followed him to the little house and heard him say, "Little sister, let me in." He told the king everything.
The sister put herbs on the deer's foot, and the next morning he felt nothing. When he heard the horns again, he ran out once more. That day the king told his hunters, "Chase the deer until night, but don't let anyone hurt him." At sunset the king went to the little house himself and said, "Little sister, let me in." The door opened, and there stood the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.
The king looked at her kindly and said, "Will you come to my castle and be my dear wife?" "Yes," said the girl, "but the deer must come with me. I will never leave him." "He will stay with you as long as you live," said the king. So they all went to the castle, and the wedding was held with great joy.
But the wicked stepmother was full of jealousy when she heard that the girl had become a queen. "My own daughter should be queen," thought the witch. A year later, the young queen had a beautiful baby boy. While the king was away hunting, the witch and her daughter came to the castle dressed as servants.
"Come, your bath is ready," they said to the queen. They took her to the bathroom, made a terribly hot fire, shut the door, and ran away. The poor queen could not breathe, and she did not wake up again. Then the witch put her own daughter in the queen's bed and made her look like the queen.
At midnight, the baby's nurse saw the real queen come in quietly. She held her baby lovingly, and gently touched the little deer in his corner. Then she went out without a word. She came again the next night and said, "How is my child? How is my deer? I will come once more, and then never again."
The nurse told the king, and the next night he watched secretly. The queen came again and said, "How is my child? How is my deer? I have come this one last time, and I will never come again." The king jumped up and cried, "You can only be my dear wife!" "Yes," she answered, "I am your dear wife." At that moment she came back to life, fresh, rosy, and healthy.
The queen told the king everything, and the king brought the witch and her daughter before the judges. The daughter was sent away into the forest, and the witch was punished for her evil deeds. As soon as she was gone, her spell was broken, and the little deer became a boy again. The sister and brother lived happily together for the rest of their lives.
