There was once a poor woodcutter who worked from early morning until late at night. He saved a little money and said to his only son, "I want to use the money I've worked so hard for to help you. Go to school and study something useful. Then you can take care of me when I'm old."
So the boy went to a big school in the city and studied hard, and his teachers praised him. But before he finished, the money ran out, and he had to come home. "I'm sorry," said the father sadly. "I can't give you any more. These days I can hardly earn enough for our bread." "Don't worry, Father," said the son. "I will help you in the forest."
The next morning they went into the forest together. The son had no axe, so the father borrowed one from a neighbor. They worked hard until noon. When they sat down to eat, the son said, "You rest, Father. I'm going to look for birds' nests." "Don't be foolish," said the father. "You'll be too tired to work later."
But the son walked into the forest, eating his bread and looking up into the green branches. At last he came to a huge old oak tree. It was hundreds of years old, and five men could not have put their arms around it. Suddenly he heard a voice: "Let me out! Let me out!" He looked all around but saw nothing. The voice seemed to come out of the ground.
He began to dig among the roots of the tree, and at last he found a little glass bottle in a hole. He held it up to the light and saw something like a small frog jumping up and down inside. "Let me out! Let me out!" it cried. The boy did not think that anything bad could happen, so he pulled out the cork.
At once a spirit came out and began to grow. In a moment it was as tall as half the tree. "Do you know what your reward is for letting me out?" it said in a terrible voice. "No," said the boy without fear. "How could I know?" "Then I'll tell you," shouted the spirit. "I'm going to break your neck!"
"You should have told me that before," said the boy. "Then I would have left you inside." "Ha! It's too late now," said the spirit. "I was locked in that bottle for a long, long time as a punishment. I am the great Mercurius. Whoever lets me out, I must break his neck."
"Not so fast," said the boy. "First I must be sure that you were really in that little bottle. If you can go back in, I will believe you. Then you can do what you like with me." "That's easy," said the spirit proudly. It made itself thin and small and slipped back into the bottle. At once the boy pushed the cork back in and threw the bottle down among the roots. The spirit was trapped again.
The boy turned to go back to his father, but the spirit cried in a small, sad voice, "Please let me out!" "No," said the boy. "Not a second time. You wanted to kill me." "If you let me out," said the spirit, "I will give you enough for the rest of your life." "You will only trick me again," said the boy. "No, I promise," said the spirit.
The boy thought, "I'll take the chance. Maybe he will keep his word." He pulled out the cork, and the spirit came out and grew as large as before. "Now you will have your reward," it said, and it gave him a little piece of cloth. "If you touch a wound with one end, it will heal. If you rub iron or steel with the other end, it will turn into silver."
"I must try it first," said the boy. He cut the bark of a tree with his axe and rubbed the cut with one end of the cloth. At once the bark closed and healed. "It's true," said the boy. "Now we can say goodbye." The spirit thanked him for setting him free, and the boy thanked the spirit for his present.
When the boy came back, his father said, "Where have you been all this time? You've forgotten your work!" "Don't worry, Father. I'll do it now." He rubbed the axe with the cloth and struck a tree. But the silver axe was soft, and its edge bent. "Look, Father! What a bad axe you gave me!" "What have you done?" cried the father. "Now I have to pay for the axe, and I have no money!"
"Don't be angry," said the son. "I'll pay for it myself." He took the axe to the town and showed it to a goldsmith. The goldsmith tested it and said, "This is pure silver. It is worth four hundred coins." The boy paid the neighbor for the axe and gave his father a hundred coins. "Now we will never be poor again," he said.
With the rest of the money, he went back to school and finished his studies. And because his cloth could heal every wound, he became the most famous doctor in the whole world.
