A man had a donkey that had worked hard for him for many years. But now the donkey was old and weak, and the man wanted to get rid of him. The donkey understood and ran away. "I'll go to Bremen," he thought. "There I can become a town musician."
On the road he found an old dog lying by the road, breathing hard. "Why are you so tired?" asked the donkey. "I'm old and can't hunt anymore, so my master doesn't want me. I ran away, but how will I live now?"
"Come with me to Bremen," said the donkey. "I'll play the lute, and you can play the drums." The dog was happy to go.
Soon they met a cat with a face as sad as three rainy days. "I'm getting old," said the cat. "My teeth aren't sharp, and I'd rather sit by the fire than catch mice. So my mistress wants to get rid of me."
"Come with us to Bremen," said the donkey. "You're good at night music. You can be a town musician." The cat liked the idea and went with them.
Then they passed a farm. A rooster was sitting on the gate, crowing as loudly as he could. "Tomorrow guests are coming," he said, "and the cook is going to put me in the soup. So I'm crowing as loudly as I can while I still can."
"Come with us," said the donkey. "You have a fine voice. When we make music together, it will be wonderful." So the four of them went on together.
But Bremen was far away. In the evening they came to a forest and decided to spend the night there. The rooster flew to the top of a tree and saw a light in the distance. "There's a house over there!"
They walked toward the light until they came to a house. The donkey, the tallest, looked in the window. "What do you see?" asked the rooster. "A table full of good food and drink, and robbers sitting around it, eating and laughing." "That would be nice for us!" said the rooster.
The animals thought of a plan. The donkey put his front feet on the window. The dog jumped on the donkey's back, the cat climbed on the dog, and the rooster flew up and sat on the cat's head. Then they began their music all together. The donkey brayed, the dog barked, the cat meowed and the rooster crowed. Then they crashed through the window into the room.
The robbers jumped up with a scream. They thought a monster had come, and they ran into the forest in great fear. The four friends sat down at the table and ate as if they had not eaten for weeks. Then they put out the light and went to sleep. The donkey lay down in the yard, the dog behind the door, the cat by the warm fire and the rooster up on the roof.
After midnight, the robber chief sent one of his men back to check the house. Everything was quiet. The robber went into the dark kitchen and saw the cat's shining eyes. He thought they were burning coals and held a match to them.
The cat jumped at his face, spitting and scratching. The robber ran for the back door, and the dog jumped up and bit his leg. In the yard, the donkey gave him a hard kick. And the rooster, woken by the noise, cried from the roof, "Cock-a-doodle-doo!"
The robber ran back to his chief as fast as he could. "In the house there's a terrible witch!" he cried. "She scratched my face with her long nails. By the door there's a man with a knife who cut my leg. In the yard there's a black monster who hit me with a big stick. And on the roof sits a judge who shouted, 'Bring that bad man to me!' So I ran away."
After that, the robbers never dared to go back to the house. And the four musicians liked it so much that they never wanted to leave. They never got to Bremen at all, but they lived there happily together for the rest of their days.
