In the days of King Arthur, there lived a farmer's son in Cornwall named Jack. He was a brave and clever boy.
At that time a terrible giant named Cormoran lived on a rocky island near the coast. He was eighteen feet tall, and everyone was afraid of him. When he was hungry, he walked across the water to the land and carried off cows and sheep.
"Is there no one who can stop him?" asked Jack. "The king will give a great treasure to anyone who can," the people said. "Then I will try," said Jack.
One winter evening, Jack took a horn, a shovel and a pickaxe and went over to the island. All night he dug a deep pit in front of the giant's cave. Then he covered it with sticks and straw, and put some earth on top so that it looked like the ground.
When the sun came up, Jack stood on the other side of the pit and blew his horn as loudly as he could. The giant woke up and rushed out of his cave. "You little rascal!" he roared. "I'll eat you for breakfast!" But as he ran toward Jack, he fell right into the pit. Then Jack hit him on the head with his pickaxe, and that was the end of Cormoran.
The people were so happy that they gave Jack a belt with these words on it in gold: "Here is the brave Cornish man who killed the giant Cormoran." After that, everyone called him Jack the Giant-Killer.
Not long after, Jack was walking through a forest. He sat down by a fountain to rest and fell asleep. A giant called Blunderbore came to get water and saw the words on Jack's belt. "So this is the famous Giant-Killer!" he said. He picked Jack up and carried him to his castle. Then he locked him in a room and went to get his brother, so that they could share their meal.
Jack looked around the room and found two strong ropes. He made a loop at the end of each one. When the two giants were opening the castle gate below, he threw the ropes over their heads and pulled them tight over a beam. The giants could not move, and Jack soon finished them with his sword. In the castle he found three ladies who had been locked up, and he set them free.
Next Jack went to Wales. One night he knocked at the door of a large house, and a giant with two heads opened it. The Welsh giant smiled and seemed friendly, and he gave Jack a bed for the night. But in the night Jack heard him singing quietly to himself: "Though here you stay with me tonight, you will not see the morning light."
"So that's your plan," thought Jack. He got out of bed, put a thick piece of wood under the blanket and hid in a corner. In the middle of the night, the giant came in and hit the bed again and again with his club.
In the morning Jack walked in to breakfast. The giant could not believe his eyes. "How did you sleep?" he asked. "Did you feel anything in the night?" "Oh, a rat hit me with its tail two or three times," said Jack. "But I slept very well."
For breakfast the giant gave him a huge bowl of pudding. Jack did not want the giant to think he could not eat it all. So he secretly put a large leather bag under his coat and dropped the pudding into it. Then he said, "Now I'll show you a trick." He took a knife, cut the bag open, and all the pudding came out. "I can do that, too!" said the foolish giant. He took the knife and tried the same trick on himself, and he fell down and never got up again.
Later, Jack got four wonderful things from a giant he had tricked: a coat that made him invisible, a cap that told him everything he wanted to know, a sword that could cut through anything, and shoes that made him run like the wind. With these, he fought many more giants, and King Arthur made him one of the Knights of the Round Table.
One night Jack came to a little house at the foot of a high mountain. An old man with a white beard lived there. "On top of this mountain is an enchanted castle," the old man said. "A giant named Galligantua lives there with a wicked magician. They have turned many knights and ladies into animals. One of them is a duke's daughter, who is now a white deer. Two fierce griffins guard the gate, so no one can get in."
In the morning Jack put on his invisible coat and climbed the mountain. He walked past the griffins, and they did not see him. On the castle gate hung a golden trumpet, and under it were these words: "Whoever blows this trumpet loud will bring the giant's castle down."
Jack blew the trumpet with all his might. The castle shook, and the giant and the magician knew that their power was over. Jack defeated the giant with his sharp sword, and the magician was carried away by a great wind. Then the spell was broken. All the animals became knights and ladies again, and the white deer turned back into the duke's beautiful daughter. Then the whole castle disappeared like smoke.
Jack took everyone to King Arthur's court. The king was so pleased that he asked the duke to let Jack marry his daughter. The duke happily agreed, and the whole kingdom was filled with joy at the wedding. The king gave Jack a fine castle, and he and his wife lived there happily for the rest of their lives.
