Once there was a very rich gentleman who had three daughters. One day he wanted to see how much they loved him. So he asked the oldest, "How much do you love me, my dear?" "I love you as I love my life," she said. "That's good," said her father.
Then he asked the second daughter, "How much do you love me, my dear?" "I love you more than all the world," she said. "That's good," said her father.
Then he asked the youngest, "And how much do you love me, my dear?" "I love you as fresh meat loves salt," she said. Her father was very angry. "You don't love me at all!" he shouted. "You will not stay in my house any longer!" And he sent her away and shut the door.
The girl walked on and on until she came to a marsh. There she picked a lot of rushes and made a cloak with a hood. It covered her from head to foot and hid her fine clothes. Then she walked on until she came to a great house.
"Do you need a maid?" she asked. "No, we don't," said the people of the house. "I have nowhere to go," she said. "I don't want any money, and I will do any kind of work." "Well," they said, "if you want to wash the pots and pans, you can stay." So she stayed and did all the dirtiest work in the kitchen. She never told anyone her name, so they called her Cap o' Rushes.
One day there was going to be a big dance nearby, and the servants were allowed to go and watch the fine people. Cap o' Rushes said she was too tired to go. But when they had all gone, she took off her cloak of rushes, washed herself and went to the dance. No one there was as beautifully dressed as she was.
The young master of the house was at the dance, and he fell in love with her the moment he saw her. But before the dance was over, Cap o' Rushes slipped away and ran home. When the other maids came back, she was pretending to sleep, with her cloak of rushes on.
The next morning the maids said, "Oh, Cap o' Rushes, you missed something wonderful! There was the most beautiful lady at the dance, and the young master never took his eyes off her." "I would have liked to see her," said Cap o' Rushes.
That evening Cap o' Rushes said again that she was too tired to go. But when the others had gone, she took off her cloak, washed herself and went to the dance. The young master danced only with her and never took his eyes off her. Again she slipped away before the end.
On the third night the same thing happened. This time the young master begged her to tell him her name and where she came from. When she would not tell him, he gave her a ring. "If I never see you again," he said, "I will die."
After that there were no more dances. The young master tried everywhere to find the lady, but no one knew anything about her. He grew sicker and sicker with love until he had to stay in bed.
"Make some gruel for the young master," the servants told the cook. "He's dying of love for that lady." Just then Cap o' Rushes came in. "Let me make it," she said. At first the cook said no, but at last she agreed. Cap o' Rushes made the gruel, and before the cook took it upstairs, she secretly dropped the ring into it.
The young master drank the gruel and found the ring at the bottom. "Send for the cook," he said. When she came, he asked, "Who made this gruel?" "I did," said the cook, because she was afraid. "No, you didn't," he said. "Tell me who made it, and you won't be in trouble." "Well, it was Cap o' Rushes," she said.
So Cap o' Rushes was called. "Did you make my gruel?" asked the young master. "Yes, I did," she said. "Where did you get this ring?" "From the man who gave it to me," she said. "Then who are you?" he asked. "I'll show you," she said. She took off her cloak of rushes, and there she was in her beautiful clothes.
The young master got well very quickly, and soon they were going to be married. Many people were invited, and Cap o' Rushes' father was one of them. But she still did not tell anyone who she was.
Before the wedding she went to the cook. "Please cook every dish without any salt," she said. "That will taste terrible," said the cook, but she did as she was asked.
The wedding day came. After the young couple were married, all the guests sat down to the wedding dinner. But the meat had no taste at all, and nobody could eat it. Cap o' Rushes' father tried one dish and then another, and then he began to cry.
"What is the matter?" asked the young master. "Oh," said the old man, "I had a daughter once. I asked her how much she loved me, and she said, 'As fresh meat loves salt.' I thought that she didn't love me, so I sent her away from my house. But now I see that she loved me best of all. And now I don't even know if she is alive."
"Father, here I am!" said Cap o' Rushes. She went to him and put her arms around him. And from that day on, they were all happy together.
