On a cold November day in 1863, a tall, thin man stood up in front of a large crowd in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. A few months earlier, thousands of soldiers had died in a terrible battle there. The man spoke for only about two minutes. But his short speech became one of the most famous in history. He was Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States.
Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky. His family was poor, and they moved to Indiana when he was seven. Life on the frontier was hard. Young Abraham helped his father cut down trees and clear the land for farming. When he was nine, his mother died of an illness.
A year later, his father married again. His new stepmother, Sarah, was kind to Abraham and saw that he loved to learn. In total, Abraham went to school for less than one year. But he read every book he could find. He borrowed books from neighbors and walked miles to get them. He read the Bible, Aesop's Fables and books about American history.
As a young man, Lincoln moved to Illinois. He tried many jobs. He split logs to make fences, worked on a boat that carried goods down the river to New Orleans, and worked in a small store. He was known for being honest, and people began to call him "Honest Abe." There is a story that he once walked several miles just to give back a few cents to a customer.
Lincoln taught himself law by reading books, and in 1836 he became a lawyer. He was also elected to the government of Illinois, and later to the national Congress. He was famous for his funny stories and his clear way of speaking. But he also lost several elections, and his life had many sad moments.
At that time, the United States was deeply divided over slavery. In the South, millions of Black people were enslaved. They were bought and sold like property and forced to work without pay. Lincoln believed that slavery was wrong. In 1858, he gave a speech in which he said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." He meant that the country could not stay half slave and half free forever.
In 1860, Lincoln was elected president. Soon after, eleven Southern states left the United States and formed their own country. In April 1861, the Civil War began. It became the bloodiest war in American history, and hundreds of thousands of soldiers died.
The war was a heavy weight on Lincoln. In 1862, his eleven-year-old son, Willie, also died of an illness. But Lincoln kept going. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It declared that enslaved people in the states fighting against the United States were free. Many Black men then joined the army to fight for freedom.
Then, in November 1863, came the speech at Gettysburg. Lincoln said that the soldiers must not have died for nothing. The nation would have "a new birth of freedom," and "government of the people, by the people, for the people" would not disappear from the earth. These words are still remembered as a beautiful explanation of democracy.
In April 1865, the Civil War was nearly over. Congress had also started to change the Constitution, the country's highest law, to end slavery everywhere. But Lincoln did not live to see the peace. On April 14, only five days after the Southern general Robert E. Lee surrendered his army, he was shot while he was watching a play at a theater in Washington. He died the next morning. He was fifty-six years old.
Lincoln grew up with almost no schooling and very little money. But he never stopped learning, and he never stopped believing that all people should be free. His life shows that where you start does not decide where you can go.
