Once upon a time there was a poor farmer who had many children. He could not give them enough food or clothes. They were all good-looking, but the youngest daughter was the loveliest of all.
One Thursday evening late in autumn, the weather was wild and stormy. The family was sitting by the fire when suddenly someone tapped three times on the window. The father went out to see who it was, and there stood a great white polar bear.
"Good evening," said the bear. "If you will give me your youngest daughter, I will make you as rich as you are now poor." The father would have liked to be rich, but he said he must first ask his daughter. At first she said no. But her father talked about how rich they would all be, and at last she agreed. The next Thursday the bear came back, and the girl climbed on his back with her bundle, and off they went.
They traveled a long way until they came to a great hill. The bear knocked, a door opened, and they went inside to a castle full of shining rooms. There was a silver bell on the table. "Whenever you want anything, just ring this bell," said the bear, "and you will have it at once."
So she lived there, and she had everything she wanted. But there was one strange thing. Every night, after she had put out the light and gone to bed, a man came into her room and lay down to sleep in the other bed. She never saw him, because he always came after the light was out, and he left before the sun rose.
For a while she was happy, but then she became quiet and sad, because she was alone all day and missed her family. "I wish I could see my father and mother and brothers and sisters," she told the bear. "You can go," said the bear, "but you must promise me one thing. Never talk alone with your mother. She will try to take you into a room by yourselves. If you do as she says, you will bring great trouble to us both."
So the bear took her home, and everyone was very happy to see her. Her family was now rich and lived in a fine house. But one afternoon her mother took her into a room alone, and the girl told her everything. "Someone comes into my room every night," she said, "but I have never seen him."
"Oh dear!" said her mother. "It might be a troll! I'll give you a piece of candle. Light it while he is asleep and look at him. But be careful not to drop any wax on him."
When the girl was back at the castle, she waited until the man was asleep. Then she got up quietly and lit the candle. There in the bed lay the most handsome prince she had ever seen. She fell in love with him at once and bent down to kiss him. But as she did, three drops of hot wax fell onto his shirt, and he woke up.
"What have you done?" he cried. "Now you have brought trouble to us both. My stepmother put a spell on me. I am a white bear by day and a man by night. If you had waited just one year, I would have been free. Now I must leave you and go to her castle, which lies east of the sun and west of the moon. There I must marry a princess with a nose three feet long."
The girl cried and begged him to take her with him, but he said it was impossible. "Can't I at least look for you?" she asked. "Yes, you can," he said, "but there is no road there. You will never find it." In the morning the prince and the castle were gone, and she was lying on the grass in the middle of a dark forest, with her old bundle beside her.
She cried until she was tired. Then she began to walk. After many days she came to an old woman who was playing with a golden apple. "Do you know the way to the castle east of the sun and west of the moon?" asked the girl. "I don't know the way," said the old woman, "but you can borrow my horse and ride to my neighbor. Perhaps she knows. And take this golden apple with you."
The second old woman had a golden carding comb, and she did not know the way either. She gave the girl the comb and sent her to a third old woman, who had a golden spinning wheel. That woman gave her the spinning wheel and said, "Go to the East Wind. Perhaps he knows the way."
After a long ride, she came to the East Wind. "I have heard of the prince," said the East Wind, "but I have never blown so far. I'll carry you to my brother, the West Wind. He is stronger than I am." But the West Wind did not know either, and he carried her to the South Wind. The South Wind had blown almost everywhere, but not there. "My oldest brother, the North Wind, is the strongest of us all," he said. "If he doesn't know, no one in the world knows."
The North Wind was so wild and cold that they could feel his icy breath from far away. "Yes, I know where it is," he roared. "Once I blew an aspen leaf there, but I was so tired that I could not blow for many days afterward. If you are not afraid, I will carry you there." "I am not afraid," said the girl.
The next morning the North Wind puffed himself up until he was huge, and away they went through the air. Below them, a terrible storm broke trees and houses, and on the sea great ships went down. They flew on and on over the sea, and the North Wind grew weaker and weaker. At last his wings dropped so low that the waves touched the girl's heels. But with one last push, he threw her up onto the shore beneath the windows of the castle.
The next morning the girl sat under the castle window and played with the golden apple. Soon the Long-Nose, the princess who was going to marry the prince, looked out. "How much do you want for that golden apple?" she asked. "It is not for sale for gold or money," said the girl. "But you can have it if you let me spend tonight in the prince's room." The princess agreed.
But that evening the princess gave the prince a sleeping drink, and the girl could not wake him, though she cried and called all night. The next day she gave the golden comb for a second night, but again the prince slept. On the third day, she gave the golden spinning wheel.
That day, some people who were locked up as prisoners in the castle told the prince, "A girl has been crying and calling for you in your room for two nights." So that night, when the princess brought him the drink, he poured it away secretly. When the girl came in, he was wide awake, and she told him how she had found her way to him.
"You have come just in time," said the prince. "Tomorrow is my wedding day. But I will say that I want to see what my bride can do. I will ask her to wash the three drops of wax out of my shirt. Only a human, not a troll, can do it. And then I will choose you."
The next day the prince said, "Before I marry, I want my bride to wash this shirt." The Long-Nose agreed, but the more she washed it, the bigger and blacker the spots became. Her mother, the old troll, tried too, but the shirt became as black as if it had been up a chimney. All the other trolls tried, and it only got worse.
"There is a poor girl sitting outside the window," said the prince. "Let her try." The girl took the shirt, dipped it in the water, and at once it was as white as fresh snow. "You are the one I will marry," said the prince.
The old troll was so angry that she burst into pieces, and the Long-Nose and all the other trolls burst, too. Then the prince and the girl set free all the prisoners in the castle. They took as much gold and silver as they could carry and went far away from the castle east of the sun and west of the moon.
