Long ago, a king had a beautiful garden behind his palace. In it grew a tree with golden apples. Every evening the apples were counted, but every morning one was missing. The king was angry and ordered that someone must keep watch under the tree all night.
The king had three sons. He sent the oldest to watch, but at midnight he fell asleep, and in the morning another apple was gone. The second prince also fell asleep.
Then the youngest prince asked to try. He stayed awake, and at midnight he heard a rustling in the air. A bird came flying, and its feathers shone like pure gold. As it picked an apple, the prince shot an arrow at it. The bird flew away, but one golden feather fell to the ground.
The feather was so valuable that the king said, "One feather is not enough. I must have the whole bird." So the oldest prince set out to find it.
At the edge of a forest the prince saw a fox and lifted his gun. "Don't shoot me," said the fox, "and I will give you good advice. Tonight you will come to a village with two inns facing each other. One will be bright and full of happy people. Don't go into that one. Stay at the other one, even if it looks poor and dark."
"How can a silly animal give me advice?" thought the prince, and he fired his gun. He missed, and the fox ran into the forest. That evening he came to the village. He went into the bright, noisy inn and stayed there, eating, drinking and dancing, and he forgot all about the bird. The second prince did exactly the same.
At last the youngest prince set out. When he met the fox, he did not shoot. "Don't be afraid, little fox," he said. "I won't hurt you." The fox gave him the same advice, and the prince followed it. He stayed in the poor inn and slept well.
The next morning the fox said, "Sit on my tail." The young man sat on it, and the fox ran so fast over hills and fields that the wind whistled through his hair. They came to a castle. "Inside, the soldiers are all asleep," said the fox. "Go through them into the last room. There you will find the golden bird in a plain wooden cage. Next to it is an empty golden cage. Be careful not to put the bird into the golden one, or things will go badly for you."
Everything was as the fox had said. But when the young man saw the golden bird in its ugly wooden cage, he thought, "It would be silly to leave such a lovely bird in that old thing." So he put it into the golden cage. At once the bird gave a loud cry. The soldiers woke up, caught him and threw him into prison.
The next day the king of the castle said, "You may go free, and you may have the bird, if you bring me the golden horse that runs faster than the wind."
The young man went out sadly, but the fox was waiting for him. "You did not listen to me," said the fox, "but I will help you again. The golden horse is in another king's stable. The grooms will be asleep. Put the plain leather saddle on the horse, not the golden one next to it." But when the young man reached the stable, he thought, "Such a fine horse should have a golden saddle." As soon as the golden saddle touched the horse, it began to neigh loudly. The grooms woke up, and the young man was caught again.
This king said, "I will forgive you and give you the horse if you bring me the beautiful princess from the golden castle."
Once more the fox helped him. "At midnight the princess goes to the bathhouse," it said. "When she comes out, go up to her and give her a kiss. Then she will follow you. But don't let her say goodbye to her parents." The young man kissed the princess, and she agreed to go with him. But she cried and begged so hard to say goodbye to her father that at last he said yes. As soon as she entered her father's room, everyone woke up, and the young man was taken prisoner.
The king of the golden castle said, "There is a hill in front of my window that blocks my view. If you can take it away in eight days, you may have my daughter." The young man dug and dug for seven days, but the hill was still there. On the seventh evening the fox came. "Lie down and sleep," it said. "I will do the work for you." In the morning the hill was gone. The king had to keep his promise and give him the princess.
Now the fox showed him how to keep everything. With the fox's clever plans, he took the princess to the king who owned the horse, and rode away with both the princess and the golden horse. Then he went to the king who owned the bird, and rode away with the bird, too. Now he had the princess, the horse and the bird.
"Now listen to me one last time," said the fox. "Do not pay money to free anyone who is going to be punished, and do not sit on the edge of a well." "That is easy," said the young man.
But in the next village, a crowd had gathered. Two men were going to be punished for wasting all their money and doing many bad things. They were his own brothers, the two older princes. The young man paid all the money he had, and his brothers were set free.
They traveled on together, and when they stopped to rest by a well, he sat down on its edge without thinking. Suddenly his brothers pushed him in. Then they took the princess, the horse and the bird and went home to the king. "We found all these," they said.
But the bird would not sing, the horse would not eat, and the princess sat and cried. Luckily the well was dry, and the young man was not hurt. The faithful fox came and let down its tail, and pulled him out.
Dressed in the rags of a poor man, he went home to his father's palace. As soon as he came in, the bird began to sing, the horse began to eat, and the princess stopped crying. She told the king the whole truth. The two wicked brothers were punished, and the youngest prince married the princess.
Some time later, the young man went into the forest and met the fox again. "You have everything now," said the fox, "but my trouble has no end. Please draw your sword and strike off my head and my paws. Only that can free me." The young man refused for a long time, but at last he did as the fox asked. In that moment the fox was gone, and a young man stood in its place. He was the princess's brother, who had been under a spell for years. Now he was free, and they all lived happily together for the rest of their lives.
