Far away, in the land where the swallows fly in winter, there lived a king who had eleven sons and one daughter named Elisa. The eleven brothers were princes, and they went to school with stars on their chests and swords at their sides. Little Elisa sat on a small glass stool and looked at a picture book that had cost half the kingdom. Oh, the children were very happy, but it did not last.
Their father married a wicked queen who did not love the children at all. She sent little Elisa to live with a farmer and his wife in the country. Then she told the king so many bad things about the poor princes that he stopped caring about them.
"Fly out into the world and look after yourselves," said the wicked queen to the boys. "Fly like great birds without voices." But she could not make it as bad as she wanted. The princes turned into eleven beautiful wild swans. With a strange cry they flew out of the palace window and away over the forest.
When Elisa was fifteen, she came home. The queen saw how beautiful she was and hated her even more. In the morning, when Elisa went to take a bath, the queen put three toads into the water. "Make her ugly and stupid," she whispered to them. But Elisa was so good and pure that the magic had no power over her. When she got into the bath, the three toads turned into three red poppies floating on the water.
Then the queen rubbed Elisa with dark walnut juice and put dirty ointment on her face and tangled her lovely hair. When her father saw her, he cried, "This is not my daughter!" Nobody knew her except the watchdog and the swallows. Poor Elisa cried and thought about her eleven brothers who were gone. Sadly, she left the palace and walked all day into a great forest.
The next morning she bathed in a clear lake and became beautiful again. As she walked on, she met an old woman with a basket of berries. "Have you seen eleven princes riding through the forest?" Elisa asked. "No," said the old woman, "but yesterday I saw eleven swans with golden crowns on their heads, swimming in the river near here."
Elisa followed the river to the sea. When the sun was about to set, she saw eleven wild swans with golden crowns flying toward the shore. As the sun went down, their feathers fell away, and there stood her eleven brothers. With a cry of joy, she ran into their arms.
"We are wild swans as long as the sun is in the sky," said the oldest brother. "But when it sets, we become human again. We live in a beautiful country far across the sea. We can only come here once a year. Tomorrow we must fly back, and we cannot leave you here. But how can we carry you?"
"Take me with you," said Elisa. So they spent the whole night weaving a strong net out of willow bark and rushes. In the morning Elisa lay down on it, and the swans picked up the net in their beaks and flew high into the sky with their sister. The youngest brother flew above her head to keep the hot sun from her face.
All day they flew over the sea. As the sun was going down, they reached a tiny rock in the water, just big enough for them to stand close together. They held one another all night while the waves crashed around them. The next evening they arrived at their new country.
That night Elisa dreamed that a fairy came to her. "Your brothers can be saved," said the fairy, "but only if you are brave and patient. Do you see these nettles? They grow around the cave where you sleep and in the churchyard. You must gather them, though they will burn your hands. Crush them with your feet, spin them into thread and knit eleven shirts with long sleeves. When you throw the shirts over the swans, the spell will be broken. But from the moment you start until you finish, you must not speak a single word, even if it takes years. The first word you say will go like a knife into your brothers' hearts."
When Elisa woke up, she began at once. The nettles burned her hands and arms, and they were covered with blisters. But she did not mind the pain if she could save her brothers. When the brothers came home at sunset and found her silent, they were frightened. But when they saw her hands, they understood, and the youngest brother cried. Where his tears fell on her hands, the pain went away.
One day, while she was working, a young king came riding through the forest with his hunters. He saw Elisa and thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world. "How did you come here, lovely child?" he asked. She shook her head. She could not answer, because her brothers' lives depended on her silence.
"Come with me," said the king. "You cannot stay here. I will dress you in silk and velvet, and you will live in my palace." He lifted her onto his horse and rode away. Elisa cried and wrung her hands, but she could not say a word. At the palace they dressed her in fine clothes, and the king decided to marry her. But the archbishop shook his head and whispered, "This girl from the forest is a witch. She has put a spell on the king's heart."
The king did not listen. He gave Elisa a little room that looked just like her cave, with her nettles and the shirts she had already finished. When she saw them, she smiled for the first time, and she kissed the king's hand. Soon they were married. She grew to love the kind king with all her heart. Oh, if only she could tell him about her troubles! But she had to stay silent until her work was done. So every night she secretly got up and went on knitting.
When she had finished six shirts, she ran out of nettles. She knew that more grew in the churchyard, but she would have to pick them herself at night. Trembling, she went out by moonlight. In the churchyard she saw frightening shapes like witches sitting among the graves. She said a prayer, walked past them, gathered the nettles and carried them home.
But the archbishop had seen her. "Now you can see what kind of woman the queen is," he told the king. The king did not want to believe it, but the next night he followed her himself and saw her go into the churchyard. His heart was broken. The people said, "She is a witch, and she must be punished." The king could not save her, and she was put in prison to wait for her punishment.
In the prison they gave her the nettles and the shirts as a cruel joke, but they were exactly what she wanted. She worked all night. On the last evening, the youngest brother found her window and said goodbye. At dawn her brothers went to the palace to speak to the king, but just then the sun came up, and they turned into swans again.
In the morning the people took Elisa to the town square in an old cart. Even then she went on knitting the eleventh shirt, and the ten finished shirts lay at her feet. "Look at the witch," the people cried. "Tear that terrible thing away from her!" But just then eleven white swans flew down and landed around her in the cart, beating their great wings.
Quickly Elisa threw the eleven shirts over the swans, and at once eleven handsome princes stood there. But the youngest one had a swan's wing instead of one arm, because she had not quite finished one sleeve of his shirt.
"Now I can speak!" said Elisa. "I am innocent!" Her oldest brother told everyone the whole story, and as he spoke, a sweet smell like millions of roses filled the air. The pile of wood that had been made ready in the square had taken root and was covered with red roses. At the very top was one shining white flower. The king picked it and gave it to Elisa. Then all the church bells began to ring by themselves, and great flocks of birds came flying. The king, the queen and her eleven brothers went back to the palace together, and there was never a happier day in that land.
