My name is Lemuel Gulliver. I was a ship's doctor, and in May 1699 I sailed from Bristol on a ship called the Antelope, bound for the South Seas. For some months all went well. But one night a violent storm drove us onto a rock, and the ship broke apart. Six of us escaped in a small boat, but a sudden wave turned it over. I never saw my companions again.
I swam for hours, pushed by the wind and the waves, until at last my feet touched the bottom. I walked up onto a quiet shore. I was so tired that I lay down on the soft, short grass and slept more deeply than I had ever slept in my life.
When I woke, it was daylight. I tried to get up, but I could not move. My arms and legs were tied firmly to the ground with thin strings, and so was my long hair.
I could only look straight up at the sky. Then I felt something alive moving up my left leg, across my chest and almost up to my chin. Looking down as far as I could, I saw a tiny human being, not six inches high, with a bow and arrow in his hands. At least forty more were following him.
I was so surprised that I gave a great shout. They all ran back in terror, and some of them hurt themselves jumping off my sides. With a great effort I broke the strings that held my left arm. At once a hundred tiny arrows flew at me. They stuck in my hand like needles, and some hit my face. I decided that the best thing was to lie still.
Soon the little people built a small platform beside my head. A person of high rank climbed onto it and made a long speech that I could not understand. I was very hungry, so I put my finger to my mouth again and again. He understood.
Ladders were placed against my sides, and more than a hundred of the little people climbed up with baskets full of meat and bread. I ate whole legs of lamb in one bite, and loaves of bread three at a time. Then they rolled up two barrels of wine, and I drank each of them in one swallow, for they held less than a cup. The people danced on my chest and shouted with joy. But there was a sleeping medicine in the wine, and soon I fell fast asleep.
This country was called Lilliput. The Emperor ordered that I should be brought to his capital city. Five hundred carpenters built a huge wooden cart, and nine hundred of the strongest men lifted me onto it with ropes. Then fifteen hundred of the Emperor's biggest horses, each about four and a half inches high, pulled me to the city. There they chained me by my left leg to an old temple, the largest building in the whole kingdom.
The Emperor came to see me. He was taller than any of his people by about the width of my fingernail, which was enough to fill them with awe. He ordered two officers to search my pockets and make a list of everything they found.
They described my comb as a kind of fence, like the railings in front of the palace. My watch puzzled them most of all. "It is a wonderful machine that makes a constant noise, like a water mill," they wrote. "We think it is either some unknown animal or the god that he worships, because he says he seldom does anything without looking at it."
I was gentle and polite, and the people slowly lost their fear of me. I learned their language. Children played hide and seek in my hair.
At last the Emperor set me free, on certain conditions. I must not leave without permission. I must not walk on their fields of corn. And I must help them in their war against their enemy, the island of Blefuscu.
The cause of this war was very strange. Long ago, everyone in Lilliput broke their boiled eggs at the big end. But one day the Emperor's grandfather, as a boy, cut his finger while breaking an egg in this way.
So his father ordered all his people to break their eggs at the small end. Many people refused. Those who loved the big end ran away to Blefuscu, and the two islands had been at war ever since. Now Blefuscu had a great fleet of warships, ready to attack.
I had a plan. I made fifty strong iron hooks and tied them to fifty strong ropes. Then I waded across the narrow channel of sea between the two islands.
When the enemy saw me, they jumped from their ships in fear. They shot thousands of arrows at me, but I put on my glasses to protect my eyes. I fixed a hook to the front of every ship, tied all the ropes together, and walked back to Lilliput, pulling fifty of their biggest warships behind me. The Lilliputians cheered wildly, and the Emperor gave me the highest title in the land.
But the Emperor wanted more. He asked me to bring back every ship of Blefuscu, so that he could rule the island and force everyone there to break their eggs at the small end. I refused. I told him I would never help to make a free and brave people into slaves. From that day, the Emperor and some of his ministers began to hate me.
Soon afterwards, a fire broke out in the Empress's rooms in the palace. I hurried there, but I had nothing to carry water in. So I put the fire out in a way that I would rather not describe. It saved the palace, but the Empress was so disgusted that she never forgave me.
One night a friend from the court came to me in secret. "Your enemies have accused you of terrible crimes," he whispered. "The Emperor has decided to make you blind, and slowly to starve you to death." I did not wait to hear more. Early the next morning I waded across the channel to Blefuscu, where the king welcomed me kindly.
A few days later, walking on the shore, I saw something black floating in the sea. It was a real boat, of my own size, turned upside down. It must have come from some wrecked ship. With the help of the people of Blefuscu, I mended it. I filled it with food, and also with some tiny cows and sheep to take home with me.
After a few days at sea, I was picked up by an English ship. The captain thought I was mad when I told him my story, until I took the little animals out of my pocket. When I got home to England, I made a good deal of money by showing them to curious people. But I could not stay at home for long. Soon I was ready to go to sea again, and to have even stranger adventures.
